convince me to get a EBC over a MBC
convince me to get a EBC over a MBC
ive done alot of research already on the forums, and found that a little over half of the ppl are using ebc, and the other part using mbc. specific threads were:
EBC: https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...5&page=5&pp=15
EBC or MBC: https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=120222
MBC: https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...ad.php?t=49372
im still debating whether or not i should get an EBC or MBC with all these opinions. im my situation, i DO have enough money for a EBC, thus, im leaning more towards getting a EBC, however, is it worth the extra $$$ getting one? i have seen many opinions on ppl saying that EBCs are worth the extra cash, and thats what i want to know more information about. in what specific ways is it worth the extra cash? i know that in just a press of a button, you can change the boost setting, lets say if you were to be "fun" driving. and turn the boost down sometime when u feel like "behave" driving.
people with MBC on the other hand say that they just get a MBC, boost it around 20.5 PSi, and leave it there for good. they just change it when the weather changes (summer, winter, etc). why not just save a couple hundred bucks, boost it to 20.5 PSI, and forget about it? if it is possible to lower boost a little bit when driving "behavingly", lets say to 17 psi, maybe yes, save gas a little bit, and maybe a longer life of the turbo and engine, so will that be worth the extra $300 spent on the EBC? I would rather just leave it at 20.5 psi constant if that wouldnt be something bad.
for an MBC, it would cost approx $150 for a Hallman with cockpit control, and another $100 for a boost gauge with installation, total $250. for an EBC, i found the best price on a HKS EVC $500 at http://z1auto.com/prodmore.asp?model...gmt&prodid=139, which should be the best EVC out there. The Blitz and Apexi are around $460 - $480. With the EBC, I believe I wont be needing a boost gauge anymore. I have heard bad opinions on the Greddy Profec EBC.
oh yea, if it helps, i have a 2005 Evo MR, with a TBE. I plan to get my intake installed, then a dynoflash afterwards. I do also plan to upgrade performance in the future, such as cams, piping, intercooler, etc.

/\ couldnt have said it better..... they claim to really do what a good MBC does with a ebc you need to get like the 500$ one... i have yet to have an issue with my mbc im in colorado with altitude weather etc... and its rock solid. No point in the Ebc unless u want something flashing in the cabin and want to use the money... get the mbc incockpit like it did

Ill definitely agress with what they said.....even though an EBC is much more expensive than an MBC, all ur paying is for the aesthetic value. It does the same things as an MBC, only ur paying more. Stick with like a hallman MBC for like $100 or less.....that'll save u some money for other things. If your worried about changing boost on the fly, Hallman makes an in-cabin boost controller where it allows u to change boost without going under the hood. I was always into an EBC because i thought MBC were crap, but after reading all the threads, i realized that an MBC is just as good, if not better! Oh well, good luck!

NO! I cannot! I don't see a need for a lcd display, long wiring, blah blah 400 more dollars and a longer install for what a small knob can do. Stick with MBC use the money to buy my cams and then sell me 280s.

Well, I really like the HKS EVC V set up. It's mounted above ashtray, with a Defi boost guage on the steering column. I've got a flash for 93 oct, and one for race gas. Rock solid boost, and very convenient to press a button and switch between to settings.
I was going to mention what number8 said. Basically, if you want to *easily* (not have to adjust with the constant use of a boost gauge) adjust boost for different ECU maps, EBC makes sense. If you're just going to be running a single map, or rarely altering it, I think the simplicity of the MBC is a good program. I do know that it's fairly easy to set the boost with the in-cockpit controller, but you still have to get a "feel" for it and tune it specifically with the boost gauge. With that said, I don't think that changing settings on my EBC would prevent me from keeping a close eye on my boost gauge for the first couple laps, so I'm leaning towards the MBC myself.
Very great guys! Ill be leaning towards a MBC Hallman right now.. Just set it at 21psi and leave it there for good... If thats the case, ill just get the one under the hood, no need for a cockpit controller (and some people might be playing with that button..).. Im more of that person that wants to drive fast, and sometimes drive slow, but like what the other person said up there, just leaves it at 21psi and if he wants to drive slow, then shift early... easy as that... the only thing is if i want to go up lets say 23 psi sometimes, that would be the advantage of a cockpit controller, however, i havent really experienced setting a boost controller yet.. ill be placing an order tonight, but will get more opinions from the hallman pro (under the hood) or hallman evolution(cockpit). i believe that the non-rx is better, according to al of dynoflash.
chris
PS: ill be getting a defi boost gauge, and i think theres one with a shift light.

I'm happy with my Blitz sbc id3. Here are the things I like about it:
(1) Less boost spiking -- It seems like with a MBC you end up with a boost spike and then taper. With a good ebc, you can control how fast the boost comes on so that it just ramps up to where you want it with no spike.
(2) Instant adjustability -- Since this is my first turbo car, I'm always worried about over doing it on boost. If I want to run 19.5 psi, I don't want to run 19.9 psi because it's a little colder out. Maybe I'm paranoid, but the EBC makes it a lot easier to fine tune boost based on weather conditions.
(3) Bling/Toy factor -- it is fun to play with I have to admit. Mine also is linked to Powermeter so I can play around with the e-dyno, see how much power a little more boost or a new mod adds, etc.
That about sums it up for me.
