If the receipt has the amount of fuel put in and the total cost you can figure out the cost per gallon and thus the grade of fuel. Though it sounds like the station agrees they screwed up. It doesn't matter if they understand how it fragged your engine, as long as their lawyer understands. I wouldn't pay a penny for the repairs. Problem is going to be arguing whether you indeed requested regular or premium when asking for the fuel. Other fuel receipts showing frequent fills of premium should help.

AP: I think he's from NJ where it is against the law to pump your own gas unless you work at a gas station.

Why don't you just take your owners manual and show them. There's a detailed explanation regarding the evo and different octane levels. My car even has a sticker on the fuel door that says "PREMIUM FUEL ONLY". It's kinda hard to mess up seeing that there everytime you pop the door. Although, I don't know if that's there on the 03's.

what's your A/F (on the rich side I imagine w/ dynoflash). Did the turbo spike - then settle to 22psi? Did you have a "Walbro" failure? Injector failure?

I'd think that these things would also be a possibility... hmmm

Lower octane in the engine of an evo will cause detonation. Detonation, sometimes reffered as knock, is when the gas in the engine is igniting before the spark fires. Detonation occurs when the gasoline in the engine is pressurized by the upstroke of the piston combined with the boost pressure of the turbo. All gasoline no matter what octane it is will explode if pressurized enough. But the octane rating gives an indication of how much pressure it can take before it will explode before it is ignited. 87 octane gas in more prone to explode before 93 octane. So what happened was that the car was detonating which cause extra heat to be exposed to your piston and it melted it.

You better get your damn money. If they don't settle, get a lawyer. I beg you not to let this slide.

I don't completely understand NJ state law, but I believe that may or may not count as negligence on the attendants part. I'll ask around for you.
