Cams and cam gears?

Help! I'm completely comfused about these things. I need a couple questions
answered.

Why and when should I do this mod?
How many Cam gears does the Evo VIII need?
Whats the difference between 264, 272, 280? (Cams)
Are the HKS Cam Gears the best?
What will the performace inhancement be with this mod?

The Lancer Evolution has 2 cams and 2 cam gears. Aftermarket (HKS) cams have a higher lift and longer duration lobe which in turn lets more gas and fuel inside the combustion chamber creating more power, the cam gears aren't entirely necessary unless your bringing it to a dyno to be fine tuned which is highly recommended. Unless your looking to make more power in the upper rpm range sacrificing low end torque then I would say do this mod, its all about personal preference. The difference btw the 264, 272 and 280 cams are the different stages of aggressiveness. Obviously the 264s are more mild, 272 would be more wild and the 280s would most likely be for that person looking to make some serious power, you would need to upgrade your valve train with the 280's, I wouldn't get these cams unless you've have upgraded your turbo and have ALL supporting mods. Some would probably argue but I would say HKS cams are the best (most proven). I wouldn't recommend this mod until you've upgraded your exhaust system, air filter and fuel pump. After doing this mod I would definately get your ecu reflashed. Feel free to add in anything I might have left out for this young lady fellas.

I have a Greddy EVO2 Cat-back Exhaust, and the Greddy E-Manage Piggy back w/Support tool but I'm going to be switching to Dyno flash. Dephi D Boost gauge and A-pilar pod are on their way.

What would be "ALL" the supporting mods?
What do you suggest for my next mod?

P.S. Nvalenti20 Thanks for all the info dude!!!

Gears aren't necessary unless you are at a higher level of performance. Getting cams alone is fine then a good tune.

No prob EVO Girl 8, for you next mods I would upgrade the rest of the exhaust system, a downpipe and either high flow cat or test pipe, upgrade your air box, filter---> many many different choices, get a mbc to keep the boost steady at 19lbs instead of tapering off, upgrade the fuel pump, then the cams and then the reflash. "ALL" supporting mods would include your fuel system, intercooler, standalone ecu or a piggyback system, exhaust system...pretty much ALL your basic performance upgrades and then some or some would say (esp. Supras) bpu+++.

What would be the best cams for good streetability on a daily driver ?

How much of an upgrade would 264s or 269s be relative to the OEM cams?

This might help you:

Best Cam

As for me I went for 264/264, need more torque and I'm 100% dailydrive; no track or drag. Only street purpose.

yeah thats a good place to start, there are 2 other posts that were very helpful when I was looking

Personally I think the GSC 264/272 combo rock and I've gotten some very impressive numbers on them. Search around I'm sure you'll find my post.
