so if everyones settin them straigh up at 0,0 then why even bother with cam gears correct?
or will retarding/advancing them give more power or just shift the powerband?

should I get them or no?

I don't think the cam gears are required.. Some people feel its potentially troublesome to have adjustable cam gears (the adjustment can shift, etc). If you plan on doing a bit of trial and error tuning on the dyno, or you have a specific non straight-up setting that you'd like to run, then get the gears. Otherwise you'll have alot less aggravation on your install if you keep the stock gears. You can always change them later if you find you need them.

does the same apply to 272's.....I can care less about lumpy idles(im all for them ) but I know lots of members are running them -3,-3 or -4,-1
is that for power or for moving the powerband?

Cam gears don't make sense only to those who don't know how to use them.

Cam gears are optional. Can they be used to get more peak power? Yes. Can they be used to improve low speed power? Yes.

I am using HKS 280s, and I am getting more idle vacuum than some 272 users. Did I achieve this by retiming the cams? Yes.

And finally, ALL the HKS cam sets have exactly the same lift and lobe separation angle (LSA). They differ in duration only.

for clarification:
the lift on the intake cam of the 280's is 10.2mm. the 264 and 272 intake cams are 10.8mm.

While that is possible, I am more inclined to believe it's a missprint.

you should break out the micrometer and go measure your intake cam to put this to rest. i'd like to know for sure.

It's certainly not worth the effort (not to me anway).

Someone who hasn't yet installed them could far more easily do this, but it's purely academic at this point.
