Timing belt tension tool?
is it needed to change the cam gears? I'm not changing cams, just the gears.
I did a search, and didn't see if there was another option.
thanks

Ditto (yes).
You need it to create slack in the belt to get the gear out. If you don't the gear is gonna be under tension when you take the bolt out. You will get screwed it you try it with out the belt slacked off.

I just went to a hardware/bolt shop and got a piece of threaded rod and two nuts. put the nuts in a bind on the end of the rod and for $2.10 I had the $45.00 tool. Do a search. I know the specs are on here. I posted them...
Just take your time screwing the tool in our you will bend the hydraulic tensioner.

Here you go guys, AMS sells it, below is the link. Also, make sure you get the right strength for the rod if you will be making your own. Trust me, several of the ones that mitsu says to buy on their manual, have broken on me. The one I have now is strong. You can definitely make your own, just as "Cajun Power" said, but make sure you get the correct rod strength and you will be golden.

no you dont. all this part does is compress the timing belt tensioner so you can put a pin in it.
all you do it loosen up the pulley (to the right of the tensioner) to release the pressure off the tensioner and to loosen up the belt. then take of the tensioner. you then use a vice to SLOWLY compress the tensioner and put a pin to hold it.
i have done this a number of times, and never had a tensioner fail on me.
