Now downshifting & rev matching (not engine breaking) while you slow down (heel toeing, so you use the brakes) or go around a turn is fine (if you can rev match and use finesse)

no wonder you evo guys have problems with your clutches. why do you think they invented brakes? they are there to stop you, your transmission isnt! the reason you downshift upon decelaration is to get you into the right rpm range so that you can rip out of the turn; to make sure your in your peak powerband!

you guys have enough of a problem with your clutches, why keep abusing them. brakes pads set you back what? $75/axle set, maybe a tiny bit more. how much does a clutch run? $500, $600, $800?

^ "you evo guys have problems with your clutches."

That seems like a very broad statment. I'm willing to bet more SRT drivers shift worse then EVO drivers.

I think he was asking if it was ok to shift into first before coming to a stop. Nothing about rev matching or engine braking. Just shifting into first before comming to a compleat stop. I say go for it but don't push too hard!!

you guys worry too much. if you want to go at it from a money standpoint, you use less gas downshifting. engine braking your injector pulse is at 0.0ms aka no gas is being injected. coasting the engine is idling, so your using gas... hahaha. downshifting is the correct way to drive a stick. even auto trannys downshift, you just dont feel it.

1. its not really all that bad for your clutch if you downshift correctly. and before you start in on that i said "not really all that bad" not it doesnt cause wear. but then again driving causes wear as well.

2. on a related issue, its a car with a manual transmission. you will wear, and if you keep it for a while need to replace, your clutch. deal with it. thats what clutches are supposed to do, get worn out. im sure 99.98% of us are aware of that.

I'm really surprised at how often I see this question asked. In normal driving, NEVER keep the car in gear, ie. engine braking. Common sense says buy brake pads and rotors; not diffs, trans, and clutches.

you usually have to double clutch first because it's like a larger jump... i do it ocassionally when i feel like i need practice... hate doing it though because all the people around you think you're trying to be cool by revving your motor.
