Exclamation Anyone who has a cutout read this!!

Ok ive been doing some searching for a while now on this whole exhaust thing. Im going to be slapping something on shortly just dont know what yet. I was looking into Megan or TurboXS TBE's but the cops in my town already hate me because of my loud cars and im always getting tickets and stuff for it, and also my mother claims she will never talk to me again if i get an exhaust.Soo....what do you guys think? if the exhausts arent that loud I would settle with either of these two. But also a cutout would be nice but there has been some skepticism of having this. Does it make power? does the valve get jammed all the time? etc.

So if all you guys with cutouts out there can please post what you think of your setup i would appreciate it!

First off, whos car is it, if it is yours then just tell mom she doesnt have to drive with you. Secondly, Im guessing you are 18 or 19, based on your statement - in which cops will look for you anyway - they see a young kid with an Evo, they will notice.

I have used cutouts on many of my other cars. I also have used the McCord Power Plate (google) so I can open them without having to go under the car all the time. For it to make power it has to be close to the collectors (yes I come from old muscle cars) so for an Evo as close to the turbo as you can get it. Sound wise, well to each his own, on built v8s with longtubes, cutouts sound great, on our cars, well I dont know about that.

Id recommend getting a TBE for the power (EDIT: when you have modded), not just for the sound, all TBE give about the same hp increase, but each sounds a little different than the other. Some manufactures have silencers that you can bolt into the exhaust, they really drop the dBs. I have an Apexi GT Spec and the A.T.S. Active Tail Silencer - its a spring loaded silencer that will open up under high loads, works great.

well i have the buschur turbo back with magnaflow muffler and a dmh electric cut out and i love it. quieter when you wont it to be but. you can make it real louder in a couple of seconds. all from the comforts of a recaro. also feels a little faster with it open.

well good guess i am 19 and i know the cops look at me anyway, but i dont want to give them a reason to bust my *****. Im just trying to find out from people that have cutouts if the power gains are similar to a tbe.

I just installed and dyno tuned a quick time performance downpipe with integrated electic cutout on my wife's WRX. I had HP gains from 3800 RPM on up to redline with a difference in peak power of 16.6 HP. This is at 15.2 psi of boost on a 2005 WRX running a stock exhaust system other than the downpipe with the cutout in it. Not quite as good as a full exhuast system, but with the butterfly valve shut it is almost as quiet as stock.

thanx for the reply Keith, but doesnt it also matter where you mount your opening? for example lets say you mounted your wifes cutout on the cat after the dp, compared to mounting it after the bend in the dp maybe you would have made more power?

also, what do you guys think of the RnR cutout? It looks like a dmh piece welded onto their downpipe. they claim gains similar to a tbe and a 1 year waranty.

running a cutout will make the most power right after the turbo... you would be defeating the purpose of it running it after the cat..

I dyno tested a car the other day with an electric cutout and it made absolutely "0" difference to the power the car was making....
The velocity of the gases were just too fast to take advantage of a new path that was opened up for them..
It was funny that with all the noise and drama I was able to observe simular a/f ratios at the real tail pipe with the wide band regardless of wheather the cut out was open or closed...
Maybe with a more balanced or biased pipe design the results would be different

Here's a page that a video and dyno numbers for a cutout. They have it so that it is wastegate actuated instead of a switch. Hope it helps

Was the car you guys tested a turbocharged car or N/A? Also, was the cut out before or after the CAT? On a N/A car, I wouldn't expect any gains since the lack of back pressure.

The pic shown is what I was refering to....the cut out is welded in a right angle and does not promote efficient gas evacuation

The car was a modified evo that was not fitted with a cat...the cut out was positioned in the test pipe portion of the exhaust..
Theoretically a turbo car needs no back pressure as the turbo itself aids in cylinder scavenging...
