New Car, Trans Problems?

Hey, im new to the Evo community but it seems i already have made it a habit to call upon your expertise.

My Evolution is an 04 with 18K miles on it. I got it from the dealer a week ago with 17.5K on it.

On my 500mile round trip home to philly from pittsburgh i noticed a grind between 2-3 and 4-5. Already knowing about the sycnro problem TSB (thanks Warrelton). I made an appointment and the Tech tells me there is no problem that is warrentable.

The recomendation was to wait till it got worse so they could do it under warrenty.

Fine.....but now a new problem arrises

Boost has always come on at 3k to 3.5k rpm.....and taken off like a rocket.

Now in second gear i get between 2k and 3k absolutely no acceleration, and around 4k the car finally takes off it did a few days ago.

In third gear the same thing happens between 3k and 4k....4.5 to 5k....there is my acceleration.

Now i can hear the turbo spool, so its not that the turbo isnt doing its thing. But my question is this normal?

Its been really cold here (30* or less) and today its 50* so i dont know if its just the temperature change and im parinoid or am i noticing early stages of slippage.

Ive done the following tests....

1) Steep incline in 1st holding 10mph.....rpms stayed constant

2) Steap incline in 2nd hold 15mph....rpms stayed constant

3) Rolling 50mph in 4th...blip the throttle....rpm jump, no accel, then accel & 600rpm drop

4) Rolling 20mph in 2nd...blip the throttle....rpm jump, no accel, then accel & 600rpm drop....

hopefully i have been through enough to get your opinions. any suggestions on additional tests are appreciatied.

sorry for the length of the post

another idea....

i thought maybe it was essesive lag from the turbo....

the filter was stock so i pulled the stock filter to see if it was the filter....

a lap around the block had some intresting noises.....i know what the recir sounds like as well as the turbo itself.....but in that rpm range where i thought the clutch was slipping i start to hear the recirc open.....i wunder if there isnt a boost leak coming from the recirc?

I would have the dealer change the fluid or do it your self and not say anything to them about it. If the problem is still their then make it worse so you know they will feel it :P. Do you have a boost gauge to see what you are boosting? Have you performed a boost leak test?

maybe a clutch issue, also check your plugs. Take it to the dealer and have them check the cluch. What mods are on the car?

Only bad thing is if its a clutch it wont be covered under warranty . But then again if your trany takes a dump you could get them to through a new clutch in at the same time and not have to pay labor on the job

far as im concerned if it is the clutch they can replace that too for free...ive had the car a fricken week....if its died in less than 1000miles they are gonna fix the sucker.....so no one thinks its a boost issue...?

I say clutch! the rpm's shouldn't jump without the car jumping with it. I say CLUTCH, and did you buy a warranty from the dealer, since its a used car, they might say "buyer beware!" unless the warranty all drivetrain components, like most do for 90 days to 6 months.

I re-read your thread, and I am sticking with clutch. you are describing what happened to my MANY clutches. they will fix the tranny, and when they do, they should put the clutch in for next to nothing. Keep taking the car back weekly, and they will either hear it grind, or be sick of seeing you, and either way, they will fix it.

My clutch lasted 5K (I bought the car with 202 miles on it) I was a bad driver with the AWD at first. I say you are due for a clutch, and it's not covered, as it is a "wear" item. just like rotors/brake pads. I wouldn't get on the boost too much, save the clutch for when they are doing your tranny. You dont want your clutch gone, before you can show it to the dealer. (replicate the grind). If the clutch goes out first, you have to replace it,then show them how it grinds. start looking for a clutch, and save the rest of clutch material you have.my 2c. good luck. You dont know the history of the car do you? maybe he was on here, and you can trace him down and see how he drove it.

If you can get it to Indy, I can have a dealership do both! I have connections!
