I've always thought that six speed transmissions were overated.

Another point is in the event you are going to modify the car and do some drag racing runs, your going to want the 5speed. MR owners are at a severe dissadvantage at the dragstrip when they are forced to shift into 5th gear or settle for 113-115mph. Not a giant problem if you are going to stick with the stock turbo, but if you plan to make GT30/GT35 power levels you will be cursing the trans or reving it past 9000rpm in 4th.

Please note that this is NOT applicable to the IX. The 5spd in the IX will have the same restriction at the drag strip due to 4th gear ending only 1mph later than the 6spd. Remember that the gear ratios in the IX were revised from the VIII.

Not sure what your speaking of because I always see short gears as a torque multiplier, pretty much pulling you thru rpm range faster just as torque does..but also depending on what your trap is..you dont want to run out of gears also, but in drag racing the short gears would probably be better for drag racing..

They do help, but only to the 1000' really, because we run out of gear before the 1/4-mile when we reach 110-111mph on the stock rev limiter. After raising it to 7800, I can reach just under 114, but as DSMotorsport said, after 115mph, you basically have to start shifting to 5th unless you have a built head or something. Any way you look at it, the 6spd is far more limiting than the VIII 5spd in terms of drag racing, especially once you cross the 12-sec barrier (11.99 or better).

There isn't a production short throw shifter upgrade for the 6speed yet. WORKS has one but if you dont live close you cant have it. Overall the 6speed shifts nicely, the throws are a little long in my opinion, but I think the gear ratios are just about perfect. I've never driven a 5 speed Evo.

I had a sunroof that I used all the time in my Eclipse, I dont miss it at all in the Evo. You dont even need a radio in a Evo. The Alcantra is really nice and is the perfect fabric for a sport seat. I think I'd be sliding all over the place with leather. The HID's are awesome.

It all depends on where you want to take the car, drag, road, mod, stay stock, etc. The MR 6sp is nice for weekend road racing, but it has smaller gears than the 5sp and that hurts survivability. The MR shocks are very very good, but if you are going to get coil overs anyway you may not care. For hard core racing (drag or road), the non-MR might be the better platform (with after-market suspension), but then you want an RS anyway to get low weight (AL roof & non sun-roof).

Hard Core = RS + serious mods
Weekend Warrior = MR + light mods
Show & Go = SSL + whatever

like i said, its just that the leather to ride in and a sunroof are very nice to have.

i am going to be using the car as a daily driver, hardly taken to the track until i get some serious work done, and i live near the beach. so yeah, the SSL package would be great, but the performance of the MR is like no other.

Suspension im going to change to the TEIN Coilovers, so that doesnt bother me. The weight and 6 speed are what i am trying to decide upon.

That kinda sucks the IX's 5 speed 4th is so short. The only complaint I have about my VIII 5 speed is the 4th to 5th shift...there is a definite lag between in and it sucks to cruise at 80mph on the highway. Id love if I could just get a shorter 5th and add a 6th for the highway, that would be ideal!

That is the one single thing preventing me from selling my 03 and getting an 06. It's a "deal breaker" for a drag racer.
