BOV HARD Coughing Noise

Ok so I just picked up a used 03 Evo =) and the previous owner has an HKS RS intake, Greddy Profec B Spec II, (19psi or 30% - what he says) and an HKS SSQV BOV... When Im on the gas hard and shift, the BOV makes a coughing noise which doesnt really sound too healthy. It does the same thing when I stay in any gear and step on it and let off real quick(it coughs HARD in 4th/5th)... Im wondering if this is OK for the car or do I need to fix/adjust something...?? I had the SSQV on my old WRX at 21 PSI and it was a smooth clean sounding chirp... no coughs at all... Is anything wrong with my evo? Should I get a reflash and trash the Profec B? What are your suggestions? Any help is appreciated! Thanks! -Steve

Well, unfortunately, the fact that you bought a used 03 that had an EBC, SSQV, and HKS RS intake tells me that you are in for a painful Evo ownership. Those mods just scream ricer-who-didn't-know-any-better-than-to-get-what-2f2f-cars-have. In actuality, the parts themselves are not of poor quality or anything, but they're definitely not recommended as first (or only) mods. If the car also has TBE, tuning, and other good mods, then you may be ok, but I would expect more problems to surface later.

My suggestion is to first replace the SSQV with the stocker and see what happens. Sell that SSQV to some ricer on Ebay. Sell the EBC to someone on here and buy a Forge UNOS MBC, keep the intake, but get an exhaust and tune quickly.

I forgot to mention, the car has an RSR downpipe and an RSR catback exhaust.. Would it be wise to put the stock BOV/Diverter back on and sell the Greddy Profec? WHat about taking just the EBC off?

your exhaust shouldnt be cause of the problem. change back to stock dv! If you dont want to use the stock dv, go with the mr dv, or the forge dv!

for the boost controller, just sell it, and get a forge mbc!!!

you need to adjust your ssqv.

Do not listen to these people saying ricer this and ricer that, they just like to bash people for their indifference. The fact that people are modding their car should let alone be a factor that they're "ricers".

If it's a 1st generation ssqv, there should be a little black screw/knob on the back part, just have to loosen a bit. Now if you loosen that too much, you may have some stall issues. If it's too tight you're going to have compression surge issues (caughing noise), so the key is just making sure it's in the neutral.

If it's the second generation model, there are way to adjust it, but it's better to have it tuned. most of the time second generation ssqv does flutter a lot more than the first generation.

Most of the time the tuning and adjusting timing does help with stalling issues but caughing sound is mostly on adjusting the bov.
