Why did my EVO do this?

I was getting on to the freeway and was in 4th @ maybe 3000rpm. I then floored it and my car made the loudest POP ive ever heard then took off. I kept it floored and it went just fine from then. Till 120 and I slowed down.

Sounds like you backfired. if you kept on it im assuming that nothing bad happened (loss of performance, bogging ect ect)

Sounds like it loaded up on fuel, mine did this when i had a very tiny boost leak, like super tiny. I would launch at track it would pop and shoot a fireball then i was off. Now the leak is fixed its gone and all good. so give that a check.

Same, I only backfire when at like 7k rpms and shifting into another gear to floor it.
