Doing Buschur pistons/rodds/rings....few questions.
Hey guys, i just ordered Buschur Pistons/rings, Crower Rodds....is it smart to just drop the new parts in the block or do you think sending the head to a machine shop to be matched up with the new pistons and have the block honed?? with my turbo prelude, i just put the new internals in and the car drove like a champ for the rest of the time, i wasnt sure if it would be the same with the evo or if some other modifications of the block were required, thanks guys for the help
I would venture to say get the block machined, at least honed. I mean, the Evo is a little more pricey than a Prelude, go the extra step. Plus, engine builds are costly...and time consuming so might as well be meticulous the first time.
Good luck.

Well it depends if you got stock bore pistons then you can just drop it in but the shop has to take a look at the walls to see what shape they are in. If there is nothing worng with it no shaveing on the walls you will be fine. Now as far as the head goes if you go with a turbo bigger then a 35R then you need to port your head stock evo heads are good up to 600whp anything past that your going to lose power ( you can ask ams if you dont beleave me on that one ) but if you do stick with stock head you got to upgrade the valvetrain on it springs and retainers for the higher lift cams and not lose topend power.
Good luck im about to rebuild my block myself and im thinking about that setup to.

I would just pull the head and measure the cylinder bore. Mic the pistons and make sure you have the proper clearances. Set the ring gap, after honing the block and drop them in.
When honing the block do NOT use motor oil. Go to NAPA and get some cutting oil and mix it with water. Put it in a spray bottle and continue spraying the oil into the bore while running the hone up and down in the cylinder. When you are done honing clean the holes with brake cleaner then wd40 and wipe with a lint free paper towel. The brake cleaner will get out all the oil and the wd40 will pick up the real fine metal shaving in the cross hatching. Keep doing this until the paper towel no longer has black residue on it.
As far as hones I am not sure what type of stone to use on a 4g63. I use aluminum oxide 240 on the VW's, cause there is alot of nickel in the block.
Also if you got your parts from Dave I would say the rods and pistons are matched within a few grams and you could just drop them in. Not to sure, call him and ask him.

thanks guys, yeah i already have a gt30 turbo kit on from Buschur, cams, and all the boltons, i just wanna build the motor a bit to handle more boost.....i did a recent compresion test that yeilded 178 177 155 166, so im assuming the pistons/rings coudl be bad.....i guess i will go ahead and take the motor apart and see what kind of condition the block looks like and hopefully be able to just drop in the new parts, thanks for the replies
