Is the shifter different between an 03 vs 06?

Is the shifter different between an 03 vs 06?
Is the 06 IX shifter (RS) any different than from a 03 VIII? I'm hoping it's shorter so i don't have to order a short shifter kit. I hated my 03...
BTW, i don't know how my IX feels yet cause i'm still waiting for it!
Well? and please don't ask me to do a search. i'm too stupid to know what to enter in the search function cause if you enter "shifter" you get a lot of diff. things...

The IX is much smoother than the VIII, however, it's still a long throw. I just added a 45% B&M a few days ago.
i guess i'll go order a short one again. Btw, is it the same style shifter? as in do the 8s crossover with the 9's?
