bump.. would a switch to evo8 5th gear from a evo9 be worth it to drop rpms/noise in the car for highway cruising around 75mph?

I would say yes, and I am actually considering this. Realistically, if you are hitting 120+ at redline in 4th, do you really need to go any faster? If your planning on going faster than that on the highway and using 5th gear, then you'd have to be psychotic although I used to do it. But I don't ever encourage racing on the street, especially at those speeds. FWIW

I am a bit confused - Evo 9 5speed and 6 speed are both nearly 1:1 ratio in 4th gear, and almost the same speed (105 and 106 mph) but have drastically different final drive ratios - so shouldn't the mph should be more than 1 mph different?

actually the 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears are all about the same and have the same mph, but they shouldn't because they are turning thru a different final drive.

You need to multiply the gear ratio x the final drive ratio to get the "apparent" equivalent final drive ratio at an equivalent 1:1 gear ratio. Right?
