Synthetic gear oil?
Synthetic gear oil?
I am fast approaching 1,000 miles and will change the engine oil very soon. I just ordered filters from my dealer that were UPS'sed to the house. I am ready to rolll.....
Question is this: Should I change the factory gear oil to synthetic?
I did that with the Galant when new also. Seems like the right thing to do. I did have to rebuilt the transmission at 138k but I don't think it had anything to do with the gear oil.
What are the thoughts of the forum?

Generally, for all Evo’s, use the best fully synthetic GL5 rated oil you can find for all the drivetrain (this does not include plated LSD’s or the AYC system as these require special oils). The Evo 4-7 gearbox requires 75W/85W rated gear oil. Please note that the service schedule for the Evo’s usually state anywhere from 26,000 miles to 45,000 miles for replacing the gearbox, transfer box and rear diff oils however, it is recommended on such a high performance car that these oils are changed sooner. Consider changing them every 9,000 miles to 13,500 miles or once a year. The cost is very small (£30-£50) and you will often find that the gear change becomes better when the oil is first changed on a new car.

okay, sorry dood but you are wrong.
please disregard what he said.
the evo tranny requires gl-4 fluid.
Gl5 fluids have additives such as sulfur which eat yellow metals such as brass and bronze.
brass and bronze is used in the Evo tranny syncros.
so your gl5 fluid will end up killing your syncros in 10k-20k miles.
mobil1 even has a data sheet on it on their website about it.
best fluid to use is redline MT90

Hi all,
I just put NEO RHD in my wife's WRX tranny and rear diff and it helped tranny smoothness quite a bit. There is a lot of info and controversy on the WRX boards about some synthetic gear oils being too slippery.
In our EVO, they recommend a GL-4 oil for the tranny and GL-5 for the diffs, right? I may put Redline MT-90 in the tranny, since I believe MT-90 is GL-4,right? I love the NEO stuff so far, so I may use that in the diffs to see how it works.
I think if the diffs require GL-5, the NEO would be excellent. I had MT-90 in my Integra and it was awesome. On the WRX forums, people had problems with MT-90 since it is GL-4 and the WRX requires GL-5 in the tranny and rear diff...
I will probably do this before 10K miles. BTW, any idea if this will help decel noise at all?
Thoughts?
