Tranny issues anyone?
Tranny issues anyone?
Hi all, I am new to the import scene, my last fun car was a big block '69 Charger. Anyways, I am having a bit of an issue with my tranny on a 06 MR. I bought it with 7 miles, and it has 1k on it now. The problem was there when i picked it up, but the guy convinced me it would loosen up with miles, since the one I test drove did not do it. In 1st, 2nd, 5th and 6th it does not want to shift directly into gear. It is like it has to be pushed through something first, then it goes into gear. Sometimes it just refuses to go into a gear. There is no grinding, it just is like the stick hits something. I was playing around with it, and it feels like the thing that prevents you from shifting without the clutch in is not completely unhooking. I had no idea these things even existed, I only used the clutch on my Charger going into 1st. I am going to stop by my local dealer today, but i was wondering if anyone had a similar problem so I know what I am talking about when I get there, since these forums seem to imply that Mitsubishi is a little weak in the service department.
Thanks all, see ya on the streets

flush out your transmission fluid and put in bg syncroshift I or II OR syncromesh...
If you put transmission fluid that does not fit oem spec/requirements (check drivers manual) you may break parts...

My '03 tranny took near 5k miles to loosen up. Then it REALLY got buttery at around like 10k. I've got 50k miles on it now and it's about perfect. In the cold months it's a tad notchier because the fluid isn't as thin, but summer like now it's butter. Granted yours is the 6 spd, but give it 'til like 5k miles before you freak out.
The problem may be with the engine movement. You shouldn't have any wear problems this early. You shouldn't need Synchroshift or anything special.
The Evo uses a twin cable shifter mechanism. I replaced the soft rubber shifter bushings with harder polyurethane ones (I had to custom grind them from a 5sp set, nobody makes a set specifically for the MR, they need to be smaller than the standard 5sp). You can get these from kartboy.com. Metal bushings will be too hard to grind unless you've got a lathe.
The MOST IMPORTANT change is the front motor mount. I ordered a proflex front bushing from TTP Engineering and within a couple dozen miles my shifting grinds completely disappeared.
The problem is this, as the engine moves around in the bay the cables have to move with it. Holding the engine in place better (front mount takes most of the forward-baclward stress) and allows the shifter cables to work more efficiently and most importantly, accurately.
Also, try compressing the clutch pedal fully to completely disengage the mechanism during a shift.
So,
Replace the shifter linkage bushings, shifter cage base bushings, and the front engine mount. Changing fluids alone won't permanently solve the problem, just put a band-aid on it temporarily until it's so sloppy just changing fluid alone won't do a thing.
edit- doh! i though you said 7k miles, and you'd since put another 1k on it. Yeah, give it some time. Mine is at 4.5k miles, and it's mmm...buttery...
