If you didn't clean off the fluid that got on the downpipe it'll smell. If thats not it you might have a leak.

I recently had the trans and t-case done on my car and the installers didn't fully seat the passenger side axle in the t-case during installation. When I got home there was trans fluid (not t-case fluid) leaking onto the downpipe from the t-case. You might want to check that out. This actually happened to me twice (by 2 different shops). Once after installing the new t-case and once after a clutch install. Its also possible the seal was torn when the axle was put back in.

If its the seal, I think you can just use some RTV to seal it up. I'm 99% sure that what Shepherd told me, but you should call to make sure first. If the axle popped out, you just have to remove the axle nut and hit it back in with a hammer. Be careful not to damage any threads on the axle though. Neither problem is hard to fix. Good luck.
