Why no SC61?

I haven't really heard of anyone using this turbo. I was just wondering if there's a reason why? They are fairly cheap in comparison to say a 35R and they are comparible in capabilities. Just curious.

It's a precision t3/t4. I've seen some with an S housing make the same power of a 35r with only slightly more spool.

I think someone on here had one on an evo, but it was a long time ago and I can't find the thread. It's a good turbo, very similiar to the gt35r, just has journal bearing.

I dont know why more people dont use them, I sell them for a great price but everyone with an evo wants a 35R. There are alot of turbos that precision makes that are great alternatives to the 30R, 35R and even the Legendary trademarked 37R turbo

Probably because it spools like sh*t? That could be a major factor.

I've seen quite a few dynos with them and they don't seem too much laggier than a 35r.

Most likely because it isnt ball bearing like the 35R and its not the popular turbo that everyone else uses. I used a SC61 on my turbo Civic and I eventually switched to the 35R for faster spool. Of course that was a 1.8 liter engine not 2.0 liter.

Dont seem too much laggier... yeah well we are talking 35R here.. its not a fast spooling turbo... its not bad for its size thats all. The SC61 has worse spool and something the dyno doesnt show is the transient response which is a huge deal. Also, go to 5000rpm and drop the hammer... the 35R is MUCH quicker to spool then.

Everyone goes by dynos when it spools but who floors it at 3k rpm and waits? I dont even do that with my stock turbo, I downshift to the right RPM then nail it. Thats what the dynos DONT SHOW and thats where this turbo sucks, not to mention inbetween shifts.

We have done them in the past. Actually we have an EVO 9 coming in next week. It already has our 2.3 and is getting an SC61 kit as well. The turbo works well, but is just a little laggier than a 35R.

Soon2BEVO: Are you speaking from experience? I am not doubting you. Just want some solid info. The price difference may not make up for the lag you are talking about. Yup. ESPECIALLY the TRANSIENT response. Guess why I still like smaller turbo :}

How about the SCM-6152E that precision makes.......has anyone tried this on and Evo yet? Seems like a pretty nice bolt on alternative for the price.

Yes a friend had it on his DSM. The actual worst part about it was the transient response. He sold it after a couple months for 35R... big difference! Dont just look at the dynos

I'm not just looking at dynos. I'm currently running one on a B16. Just didn't understand why more of the Evo crowd weren't running then. I know exactly what you mean about the transient response though. I've felt a couple 35r cars and even though from way down, they appear to spool about the same, once the 35r starts building some boost it hit's peak a bit quicker. I just figured a bolt on turbo like the SCM61 might be a good alternate bolt on for pretty big power aside from the FP turbos or the ATP setups.

The only "bolt-on" turbo upgrades available for us are the 20G-9/8s. The ATP turbos have shown to be lackluster.
