I know RnR has 12,000 miles on their 731whp 2.4/GT37R combo.

6,500 miles on mine. No problems except that my built motor has always been noisy. Ticks pretty loud, but perfect compression, perfect power, burns almost no oil. I even went 335 miles on a single tank of gas with a 35R turbo. I have the standard ams stroker kit with their Ross pistons at .020 over. The ticking kinda sounds like piston slap or really noisy cams and it never goes away. I'd give my left nut to get rid of it but it RUNS PERFECTLY. So I just live with it.

I think it depends on the pistons used and the wall clearance. the tighter the clearance the less the noise the greater the risk of something going wrong, the looser the clearance the more noise, the greater room for expansion under high boost/heat/whatever.

Thats all AFAIK, I could be horribly wrong but thats what I have been told.

p.s. my mitsu dealer installed mine....

I heard a new engine gasket, oil pump, timing belt, tensioner, balance shaft and oil cooler is necessary when going with a 2.3 kit?

Not necessary, but all is a good idea, I happened to do all of those minus the tensioner, balance shaft and cooler.

An oil cooler is a good idea anyway once running this much power, if you plan on doing any intense driving for extended periods of time, I hope to be purchasing one in the future. Keep the balance shafts unless your car is going to be a weekend only or sort of driven on rare occurances type of ride, replace all the other stuff though.

Stock head gasket and timing belts are fine btw, you don't need some uber pricy jdm branded pieces, the OEM stuff works...

Hope this helps!

Dan Benson measured the Ross/AMS stroker pistons while he had them in his shop and commented to the Tuning Technologies guys that they have a lot of taper. Apparently they have more taper than many pistons he typically sees going into street engines. I wasn't there when he said this so my info is second hand. Maybe that helps explain why my motor is slappy/ticky???

That makes at least some sense, to me, if the slap was coming from a straight piston it would be a sure sign the the clearances were just too much, from what your saying smoggy maybe its just the design of the side of the Ross piston's that contributes to the noise, from what explained I am envisioning a piston that instead of a flat side(side that mates cylinder to piston) it has a slight taper that narrows it up towards the crank end of the piston?

If this is the case thats interesting, I would love to know how running a piston like that effects durability/wear on the inside of the cylinder, I wonder if the lack of friction/surface area decreases it, or if the action of the piston hitting the cylinder increases it..

Good Stuff Smoggy,

I'd love to hear if anyone else with my exact stroker combo (4g64 crank, AMS/Ross pistons, Eagle rods, balance shafts removed) has the same noise I am experiencing but with no apparent ill effects...
