4th gear grinding problem
4th gear grinding problem
I recently had this problem and its very weird. I only have 10k miles and my 4th gear already grinds. The thing is it only grinds sometimes. Dont worry im not a stupid newb and i did search. The problem is when im on the highway or city and cruising and put it in neutral and coast for a little bit in neutral then trying to put it into 4th it grinds and wont go into gear. Also sometimes when i skip from 6th to 4th it will grind too. I usually dont skip gears but only when i need too. Some help will be appreciated. Thanks in advanced.
Maybe it is your synchros and I am guessing you still have warranty. You should go to your dealership and ask them to check it out. They might say nothing is wrong at first but take one of the mechanics for a test drive and repeat the problem. It will be covered under warranty. Good luck though!

i currently have the same problem..have you gotten this fixed yet?..let me know..shoot me a pm or something if you'd like.
I also have the same exact problem. My car grinds only from neutral to 4th and from 6th to 4th only!
Anyone has any suggestion? BTW... I replaced the tranny's fluid with redline a few weeks ago.
Weird thing is that it does not grind from 3rd to 4th @ 7600 RPMs but it grinds comming from 6th/neutral @ 4000 RPM. Odd!

Hello?........
EDIT: BTW- not meaning to jack or anything, but does anyone have a definite answer for whether or not the fourth gear size is different from 05 to 06 MR's or have you guys with IX MR's broken 4th?

i recently had this problem. I took the car into mitsubishi. Mitsu said that the only way they would check to see what was wrong with the car is if i authorized the tear down of the tranny. I did and it turned out that the 4th gear syncro was done. They said that if the syncro had any hotspots on it they would charge me for the repairs or if i decided not to make the repairs i would have to pay for the tear down. They didn't find any hotspots. They replaced 4th and 3rd syncros. They kept my car for a little over 3 weeks. They were waiting on parts and they also broke parts of the tranny taking it apart. They did end up covering the tranny repair. However the car was taken to the shop with no mods at all. The tranny never had an aftermarket clutch or flywheel.
joeMama,
What members you were refering to?
In my experience (Honda cars), a bad synchro use to grind only at high RPMs and mostly when coming from 2nd-to-3rd or 1st-to-2nd.
My car has never been under heavy driving. Only 3 passes on the 1/4 mile in the track. It is a daily driven car and has been treated well. I checked the tranny oil on last replacement and was in a very good condition.
I have never had the experience of a car that will grind in 4th gear only while getting the car from neutral to 4th at 25-40 miles. I heard that it can be related to clutch adjustment. Can anyone elaborate on that?

I might be a clutch adjustment, but a synchro can go bad simply by missing a shift around town...or maybe a defect. Who knows, but I had a very similiar problem and ended up sending my trans to Shep for a rebuild.
As said earlier, good luck to ya!

I just replaced my 4th gear and syncro. It seems that 4th gear is only a single syncro while 1 and 2 are 3 cone syncros and 3 is a 2 cone syncro. Seems like single disk clutche are more likely to lock you out than cause a grind. I would baby the 4th gear if you are worried about tearing the syncro apart. Ive always backed off if i felt a grind of any sort instead of shoving the gear in. If you keep grinding the 4th gear its will start to wear down the teeth.
