Unhappy misfire and sputtering(i did search, just read)

OK so yes i have searched and read a bunch of the posts not all but a lot since there are like thousands of them.

Ok so my car gets the random misfire code all the time, everytime i drive it. sometimes 5 times in 1 hour of driving. a lot of times there is no problems that come along with it so i just delete it. but if im on a long drive like today when i drove 6 hours to connecticut it will happen if i am above 3,200 rpms for more than a minute or so not boosting or anything none 0 psi. when it happens i get like a vibration and sputtering and like "brubububububububububububububu" then i can just let off the gas and accelerate and its fine. but it happens all the time when im on a long drive and gets very annoying because its an 04 5 speed and i dont wanna go 75 the whole time i would to go like 85 but i cant because this crap starts happening. anyone has any ideas let me know thanks!

I am not an expert, but it seems that you have either a fuel injection problem, or you are using bad gasoline. That happens to me in Brazil if the gasoline is mixed with other stuff like alcohool, water and benzine, whatever they can put on the gas.

I could also be a spark plug problem. I would check three things:

1. Spark Plugs (the stock ones are really good and suposed to last a long, long time, but you never know).

2. Poor quality gasoline - put some stuff to clean your gasoline, like octane booster or something to flush down and clean your fuel injectors (STP has some good stuff)

3. Check your fuel injector.

It does not seem to be anything serious, if your oil level and coolant levels is fine, it should be not something serious.

Well.

Tell us more; have you recently made changes to your set up, have you done a boost leak test, have you tried changing plugs?

If your plugs were not gapped properly, then the spark will either blow out, and, or not make the jump. It's happened pletty of times the way you describe it. ...or, if you've bumped the boost up a little, a closer gap may clean up your misfires too. Use stock plugs they worked when you goth the car didn't they? No Iridium crap.

max boost is like 22 or 23 psi which i barely get to because i havnt got the flash for the boost cut yet. but this is happening when im not boosting at all is the wierd part. i will run down to a napa or something close to where i am tomorrow and buy a spark plug socket or see if they got 1 i can barrow and pull them out and check the gaps and make sure they are good plugs. anyways i havnt changed anything since i bought the car besides the test pipe. the guy before me said he had the misfire problem but im not sure if it was as often as its happening to me or if its having the same wierd problems when it happens too.

maybe you like to check for popped hoses 1st .. especially those behind the intake manifold .. the one going to the evap canister is notorious for popping out .. and it does cause random misfires .. though not as frequent as you mentioned ..

The sputtering when the CEL comes on is just the ECU going into failsafe mode. As soon as you let off the gas completely it resets and the engine runs fine. I've had the same issue on longer road trips on the highway. I've reflashed my ECU and smoothed out the low-load timing around 3000-3500 RPM and it hasn't happened since. I'm hoping I've fixed the problem but only time will tell.

SWOLN, the stock plugs ARE Iridium.

OP, get BPR7ES gapped to .026 like we always say...

I had that problem running the BPR7ES gapped to .26. I was getting random misfire code every thousand miles or so. It was pissing me off so much that I put the stock plugs back in. It's been like five hundred miles so far and I haven't had the random misfire yet. The car also idles better. Maybe I'm the only one but for me those cooper plugs just aren't working. I don't think they will be going back in my car.

I get the same thing on my bone stock 03 evo. It was happeneing at 16K miles when I bought it and still does now at 52K miles! The same thing you describe!! on long drives!!!! Luckily I took it to the dealer... they were unable to troubleshoot every time... they re-flashed the ecm....that was no good! Finally at 35,568 miles...THEY PUT NEW PISTON RINGS ON IT (per a service bulletin)..!! Then guess what happenend ???? It DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM.. I am in the same boat on a completely stock (for the time being) 03... If you hear something let me know...thanks, and good luck!
