Question car running very badly

Here is the deal. 03 EVO. Had a K&N intake on the car for a while and took it off the other day. Returned it to the stock stuff. I am having some issues now. When driving the RPM's climb but the car doesn't get going. Like it is building boost but not using it. After a few seconds it all of a sudden takes off like a bat out of hell. I checked the intake hose and the all the clamps and everything is real tight. I have no idea what to do. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Was it a K & N drop in filter? If it was you might have some oil residue build up on your MAF and may need to clean it.

I'm not so sure it's the clutch. When I've had my clutch start to go my car would start to accelerate then the RPM's would climb and the car would not not move much after that. This usually happened in the higher gears (4th and 5th). His symptoms are the opposite. I've had a dirty MAF do what he described. If the MAF isn't the problem, you might want to disconnect the battery and reset the ECU and see if that doesn't help. Otherwise you need to look over your engine some more to see if you didn't miss something else.

I had the K&N Typhoon intake. I know I should have just got a drop in filter but oh well. Hindsight is 20/20. I don't think it is the clutch. I have babied the car since new. Never had any issues with the clutch. Another thing I noticed when driving with the A/C is on and I come to a stop with the clutch in the car wants to stall or almost stall.

You have to do this if you havent. UNPLUG the negative terminal on the battery for 10 minutes. re connect, start the car (DONT TOUCH THE GAS!!) let it idle for 10 minutes, done!!

You changed something on the car, and your car doesn't recognize the change, and that is the reason it is acting funny. do this and report back. Your computer recognizes the air the cone was tossing at the MAF, now it recognizes a "different" amount of volume.

I am heading out to the garage right now to do that and will let you know when I am done. I did disconnect the battery the other day and then drove it. It still drove like crap. I will try this routine and see if that makes a difference. thanks for the info smokedmustang.

im getting the same problem as you..the rpm climbs and the car doesnt move but then it would grab real hard like a second later and launch. i have a feeling it might be my clutch after many searches. my clutch grabs really well when im not boosting but as soon as i boost that's what happens. it probably is your clutch

What the poster above me described is clutch. No doubt about it, now as to the original poster, its not jumping up the rpms, like the car is in neutral, and then coming back down when it catches. Of course the clutch wont slip when your not in boost. The clutch will only slip (unless its really messed up) at max tq, which in our car is right as we hit full boost, at about 3700 rpm ( i think thats right). Time for a new clutch, mine isnt slipping yet but i can tell its about to go. hey 50,000 miles with about 8 two steps isnt to bad.

how can my clutch going bad affect the car while just driving down the road. my problems happen while just cruising down the street. i am not saying that it is not the clutch or anything else. i just dont know for sure.

It's the clutch for sure...it slips when you apply torque, especially in higher gears at lower rpm where there is more load right at peak boost. Classic slipping clutch symptom...
