Gas Guage Wierdness
Gas Guage Wierdness
Yesterday, getting close to break-in miles, I took a small road trip. Started with about 3/4 of a tank on the guage. This was about a 20 mile round trip. I stopped half way for about 20 minutes. Speeds never really got excessive, but this was all freeway so they went from 50-70. On the way back, I noticed the gas guage slightly below 1/2 tank. Hmmm... I thought that was kind of odd. When I pulled onto my exit at the end of the trip, looked again and it was almost at 1/4. YIKES! Thinking "gas leak?" to myself. Eased into a drive through to get some food, watching the guage the whole time. It was actually _dropping_. Now, under 1/4. I get my food, pull into a spot and get under the car. No leaks. I kick it for a few, then shut the car off. Let it sit a couple minutes and start it back up. Guage now at 1/3. Drive the 1 mile or so back to work, still at 1/3. Evo sits for a few hours, start it up and it's over 1/2 now. Later as I neared home, it was almost at 2/3's again. I am confused.
Anyone else had this sort of thing?

I ride with my buddy in his Evo from time to time, and you can actually WATCH the gas needle drop while in motion. I can't say I've ever seen such a dramatic fluctuation in the float before.
The Evo doesn't exacly get great mileage, but this doesn't sound right.
I would fill the tank to the top, and record how much gas was needed. Do this again whenever the tank shows it's nearing empty, and record the gallons and mileage.
Do this 3 times and average the mileage. If it seems off the wall, you need to get that car if for an inspection, because it's burning gas too quickly.
The other possiblity is that the tank float is messed up. Only the dealer can fix that problem. If it worries you too much to fill up a few times, just take it in right away.
Hopefully it's just a bad float.
