Doing your own Tranny rebuild...

Anyone ever done it?

For someone who's done almost everything to their Evo, including a clutch change, how hard is it? Pretty straight forward, as long as you remember what you took out and how it goes back together?

Any words of advice for someone doing it for the first time?

Anything?

I would go to the nearest "Schwinn" dealership just in case.

When you tear it down put all the parts on a string in order, then tie it up. That way you won't loose track of anything. I've seen people have problems with that before.

Don't use a solder that is hard for measuring shims, if you can't put a dent in it with your fingernail it's too hard. Also do not make it too long, you will not get proper compression and end up shimming too tight if you do.

Have you rebuilt any trannies before? Do you have a factory service manual?

I have not personally. I've seen a couple in progress. I hope to have a former mitsu tech around for assistance though.

I do have the service manual. It's not very good though.

Brian send it to shep, you will not regret it. It's less than 1k and well worth not having the hassle, plus he does his own modifications to the tranny, plus the TSB's

I did the 5 spd trans in my AWD DSM and have about 100k on it with no issues. I rebuilt a couple of RWD 4 spds before it, and also differentials, so it was not a new experience, it just combined the two. It was not that difficult but there are a LOT of parts to deal with. The factory service manual is a must. I don't have the Evo manual, so can't comment on it, but found the factory manual for the DSM to be excellent- has always told me everything I need to know over 15 yrs I've had the car. Sometimes it is a little vague on electrical but is excellent for mechanical IMO.

Ideally you should have two work benches and obviously the necessary hand tools plus a dial indicator and base. I have a hydraulic press, bearing puller plates, slide hammers with blind bearing puller attachments, etc, and did everything myself. The press I have is the 12 ton Harbor Freight model and was one of the best purchases I've made.

I tried several different types of solder for endplay checks. What I found was that none were truly accurate- I double checked the ones possible with a dial indicator and even the softest solder was, IIRC, at least 10% off. However, I'm sure this is plenty accurate.

I say go for it, especially if you have access to a helper with experience.
