HELP - Intake hose keeps popping off

Haro all-

So the hose to my engine intake keeps on popping off, especially when I try to go to WOT on my 2006 EVO MR. This of course leaves me w/ no power when I hit the gas and of course always seems to happen right in a key situation.

Now I've outlined the hose in question in the pic below and the dealer lovingly calls this part "the snorkle". The "snorkle" is the threaded fabric hose from your intercooler pipe to the intake and they insist that I should just keep tightening the clamp from time to time to prevent this. Now this issue has manifested itself 3 times in the last 3 weeks.

Now this seems like a pretty sh*tty deal to me considering that this car cost a good chunk of change and I am wondering if anyone else has had this issue. If so how did you solve it? 10 to 1 says theres a tube out there that I'm just not aware of (I can only find tubes that go w/ CAI).

ANYTHING would be appreciated at this point b/c I'm so scared of it happening I'm becoming a nervous nelly on road trips. I also have to say w/ all the issues I've had I am thinking of selling my car (all of 4 months old) and going back to Subaru, but want to give this one last shot.

Somebody throw this Mitsu n00b a freakin bone here please.

Thanks in advance.

Thats a very common issue. All you have to do is get some Tbolt clamps and tighten the crap out of them. The stock worm gears aren't too strong and cannot be tightened too much.

BTW, I know how you feel. I had my LICP come off and that sucked. At least the throttle body is easily accessible.

Welcome to the club. Its nothing major to worry about, but some T-bolts should help. I had that happen to me constantly even when I was bone stock. I haven't had any issues with it since.

Btw, that's not a hose to your intake. It doesn't touch your intake, although it does touch your intake MANIFOLD. What's popping off is your upper intercooler pipe right at the throttlebody. It is not a snorkel, so I don't know why they'd call it that. The "snorkel" is the funnel that sends air into your airbox. Again, that whole series of pipes and hoses is the upper intercooler pipe. I'm curious why you keep saying it goes to your intake?

There are plenty of upper intercooler pipe sets that are sold separate from intakes. In fact, MOST of them are, so I'm not sure what you mean when you say you can only find "tubes that go w/CAI." The Injen intake includes the UICP, but Buschur, AMS, NISEI, and many other companies sell UICP as a separate part. Some are routed in a manner that requires you to have an aftermarket intake and others fit with the stock intake/aribox. However, purchasing an AFTERMARKET UICP does not make you less prone to having this problem. In fact, most people don't encounter the problem UNTIL they mess with that part and "upgrade" it. In your case, you just aren't getting a good seal or clamp down on the hose where it mates to the throttlebody.

What you need to do is get some heavy duty worm clamps or t-bolt clamps and fasten those down tightly AFTER spraying some hairspray on the metal outside of the throttlebody where the hose connects just before the bead. This will get sticky and eventually form a seal after you've clamped down the hose.

In conclusion, I cannot IMAGINE selling an amazing GG IX MR just because the IC hose is blowing off. That's such a basic and common thing with heavily-boosted cars...

Take the hose off spray the end with hair spray and install. With gt35 and meth I ran
29 psi for 4 months until I upgraded to hard pipe.Hair spray works like a glue, but
if you need to remove the hose you break it free buy twisting it.

WELL - good to know that I'm not the only person who has been dealing w/ this. Problem w/ a new car and a completely different company is you have to learn the quirks and oddities. I can tell you all the subtle issues of a Subie and how to fix them, but clearly dont know my elbow from my a$$hole when it comes to Mitsu's.

I thank everyone for their patience and their help w/ this, really its appreciated.

I'll make sure to go out and get a T Bolt and some hairspray (wow) this weekend. Anyone recommend a certain hairspray? Do I go for extra hold? Will a light hold do?

Just kiddin everyone

Warrtalon - Thank you for the indepth explanation. Good to know that the UICP wouldnt solve the problem all out. As for some of your questions "I'm curious why you keep saying it goes to your intake?" I meant it was going to the intake manifold (just like you said) I just should have said so.

"I cannot IMAGINE selling an amazing GG IX MR just because the IC hose is blowing off. That's such a basic and common thing with heavily-boosted cars..." Unfortunately this is not the only issue that I've had w/ the car. She spent the first 5 days of the 9 days I owned her in the shop for three different reasons. That combined w/ this and other issues really just chap's my a$$ that I dropped $35k and continue to have issues that shouldnt be there in the first place on a 4 month old new car.

However I am going to give the car another shot b/c I love it (save for the welts on my a$$ after driving in Boston), especially when you're in second gear, punch it and feel like the car is grabbing you by the scruff of your neck and throwing you into next Tuesday...Subaru aint got sh*t on that.

Nope dont mind you asking at all

-Basically the timing belt and the balance belt were rubbing against each other because the crankshaft blade was "ouside its tolerance" and pushing them into each other. This required they replace all the belts and put in a new crankshaft blade.
-I get the car back, drive 100 yards and it misfires so it goes back for that
-Then of course the hose keeps popping off the intake manifold.
-I got hit by a drunk driver who ran on me (couldnt catch his plate) which is not the car's fault but just another thing to add to the ever growing list of things happening to this car.

Basically its an issue for every month I've owned the car, but at least now I know how to deal w/ the hose issue

So after taking a look at the sticky for Tbolt clamps, I presume I should be using the 2.75 - 3.06 sized clamp for the throttle body?

Cheers

hahaha i wonder if you could lemon law for a new evo just for ic hose popping since the dealer is too dumb to fix it.

anyways tbolt clamps and hairspray are your best bet. i suggest buying extra tbolts to change them all.

A little hairspray did the trick for me, I'm still using the worm clamps and I beat on my car a lot Although being such a hardcore dsm'er I always travel with toolbox and ratchets for just that problem...

If you need some local help, shoot me a PM and I may be able to help you.

Hope to see you on the roads!

If you can't handle a blown IC pipe, I think you should sell it and head back to the Subaru camp...
