Turbo upgrade questions...

Alright guys, the sale is pending on my WS6 trans am. and im picking up a beater for winter.... so i plan to mod my evo over the winter, but dont want to sacrifice much realiablity or break the bank.... so this is what i plan to do but have alot of questions because this import thing is new to me...

what do you all think of this turbo kit http://www.gruppe-s.com/Evo/evoeng/ATPGT30.htm... does this provide everything i need? to install it properly...

obviously i will be putting in Walbro fuel pump, Recirc BOV, Man boost controller, turbo xs downpipe, no cat, greddy sp2 catback. then i will go to turbo trix for a flash....

now the questions i have are... is this everything i need? is there any other mods that would compliment this kit nicely ( IC pipes?) I do not want to put cams in the car.

with this setup is 360-375whp achievable on pump gas without the loss of driveabilty?

thanks alot -steve

I personally would go with a more popular kit. If you are going to upgrade the turbo, might as well get a full kit that will make good power. Look in the group buy section for the kit Shearer has on sale.

If you want to upgrade your turbo and get a safe tune, check out AMS.
I wouldn't go anywhere esle.

I am going to mod my ATP to another kit..... so yes get another brand..... spool is horrible, tourqe is much lower in relation to HP. Its due to the ATP's design of the hotside it has a sharp turn in it, reducing its ability to make power get a vishnu kit (thats what I am turning mine into. Or get a used ATP kit for like 1100 and get a diffrent hotside?

IT really depends on your budget. Before you upgrade your turbo on the 8 you should have the following:

3 inch tbe exhaust, manual boost controller, fuel pump, hks/comp/etc. 2XX cams, upgraded blow off valve (the factory metal bovs are great they sell for about ~$120 and have 0 driveability issues), arp headstuds, possibly an intake (not mandatory), and a good ecu reflash or piggyback device like utec/xede.

That should yield between 330-350whp on 93 octane with a good tune. If you plan on doing drag racing and have never launched an AWD car before you might want to save at least $1,200 for a good clutch + install.

IF you are still powerhungry than you will probably need a turbo kit, but remember that big turbos on pump gas are not to fun to daily drive, so you might want to consider investing in alcohol injection kit, but than again a whole new bunch of responsibilites come with that.

good luck....

I am surprised that this vendor carries that particular turbo kit. Best advice is don't buy it. As someone else mentioned, there are issues with the poorly designed exhaust housing. No one has gotten the thing to produce the power it should.

with this setup is 360-375whp achievable on pump gas without the loss of driveability....
You might as well save your money, as with the stock turbo you can reach your power goals. If your heart is still set on a 30 series kit then get an AMS, Vishnu, Buschur, Shearer or TT one.

the thing is i dont wanna put cams in the car... that would sacrifice realibility. for the most part the car is going to be a dialy driver.. but probally only 5-6k miles a year.

so since you guys dont recomend that it... what kits are out there for under $3000 bucks... all the other kits are 3700-4500... remeber im not looking for insane power here, just a modest 375whp+

ok the 4g63 is a very reliable motor, and putting cams will not sacrafice reliablity. you can have next to perfect idle with a set of 272's or a 264/272 combo.

on a friends 05 MR, we put hks 264/272 cams, and went from a 12.9 to 12.5 1/4. cams really open the engine up! if future might include alky / meth might consider at this point adding some head studs for high boost later on. plus it can only help reliability.

adding to what you already posted :
some cams, ebay o2 housing, some upper and lower intercooler piping, along with that good tune from TT will be close or equal to your goals.

you will be good for high mid to high 11's if you drive it correctly

im not a fan of alky for reliability issues but if your power is not sufficent after the things that i suggested, with alky or meth you can retune and run mid high 20 's on boost, and that garunteed will hit your goals.

good luck, keep us informed.

hope this helps.
