I never thought about using a drum brake adjuster spring. I always used a small hose clamp and some mechanic's wire but that looks much cleaner.

That's not a drum brake spring, nice try though. A drum brake spring would work, anything spring you can get between the two points will work.

This is some generic spring we found with a decent amount of tension but no so much you can't get it off. The ends are much longer than needed so we bend them to work on each end. The end at the bracket is bent so it is impossible for it to fall off when you release it from the dipstick.

Good idea, I'll have to find a spring as I get sick of the zip ties. I found out the hardway when my dipstick popped on the track and sprayed the engine w/ oil.

I just use zip ties but I never thought of a spring... my dad has to have one lying around his garage that should work for me. Thanks for the idea

Pretty cool idea, I actually did this with my old Evo that was on alky.. blew out that dip stick all the time. So I went down to Home Depot and in the Hardware section you can find a rubber strap with 2 hooks on the end, it's usually where they keep truck bed accessories. I don't remember how much they were, but they weren't that expensive. Best of all, the strap was black.. so it didn't stand out in the engine bay.

I've had this problem, but the bracket that holds the tube to the intake manifold broke for no reason other than being cheaply made. So I have to zip tie the tube in place.

Dave are you drawing up the design for a threaded dipstick?

This is a great idea.. I've been using a Carb return spring for a few years on my car, it was the right length to reach the bracket and clip around the dipstick.. I got it from one of the spare parts off my malibu.. never had my dipstick pop out since I did it..

You wouldnt happen to have anything for DSMs would you? I remembered it happened when I first bought the dsm last year. Then I simply replaced the dipstick and it was over. Then I put in hard intercooler pipes and it started blowin out again. I actually fried and alternator from all the hot oil spraying everywhere.
