Not good. Ticking on start up.

So i just got my 04 RS EVO With 38k onit about 3 weeks ago, Car isnt driving hard, i drive it to work and thats about it. Being a tech myself I have learned to just beat on cars at the track. Anyway, starting to get a tickign noise on start up kinda like a lifter sticking. not good, car goes in Weds for rear tailling arms, and rust, guess this is one more item to had to my list, good thing i got a warr. to 125k :O)

Does the ticking stop once the engine reaches operating temp? It's not uncommon to get a little lifter tick upon start up in cold weather. As long as it goes away when the car is warmed up, I wouldn't worry about it. If you're not running an oem oil filter I would suggest trying that first.

Funny you mentioned NAPA. Buy 5 quarts of Amsoil 10W30 from NAPA Autoparts, and an OEM oil filter. Try it and your ticking could be a thing of the past after a day or two of using this oil. Good luck.

Welcome to owning a EVO, they get lifter tick all the time. I would be worried if mine stopped ticking. Sometimes a oil change and using a different oil filter would stop the ticking.

Are you guy's sure it's lifter tick and not the injectors clicking? I thought my lifters were ticking too after I installed cams, but found the ticking coming from the injectors and not the lifters.

At least you didn't say it is normal like I've read here so oftem. The only purpose of a lash adjuster is to prevent ticking. So, if you have ticking it is not normal.

Others say .... because of the tight tolerances the lash adjuster are built to they are prone to sticking and ticking. Well, GM makes millions of push rod engined cars with lash adjustors, same design, and they don't tick.

What it comes down to is, after several design revisions, Mitsu still doesn't have it right.

This sound is very normal on the 4G63 engines. They can do the noise while cold or hot however they will mostlikely do it more often in the mornings.
4 DSM 4G63 powered engine cars and 2 Evos later I no longer worry about this noise anymore, is part of the engine.

My observations are that you must always have the correct oil level to minimize the noise and off course always have some good shyntetic oil, other than that everything is Ok.

my .2c

Carlos.
