popping out of 1st
i have a similar problem, when i shift from first to second i get/feel a pop, but it never does it on its own, i have never been too worried about it and i have around 20 thousand miles...if i should be worried let me know lol
in highschool back in 98 my autoshop teacher told me that if you rest your hand on the shifter, the weight of your hand can wear the shift forks and I think thats why it might be popping out of gear. he was the very 1st person who ever told me that. after highschool i heard this information from several other people also including tranny specialist... I try not to make it a habbit to rest my hand on my shifter now..
I wanna know if this quick jump out of 1st is actually a BAD thing. It doesn't bother me much and I don't get any noise with it. My dealer says it's fine, and I've let other people drive my car and they say it's fine too. Does yours jump out of 1st often? Mine only jumps once in a blue moon, and it hasn't happened in a while. Let me know how your dealership visit goes.

yea im not expecting them to be finding anything... i mean it happened a couple times, but its most likely not going to be able to do it again, as it doesn't happen often. As far as resting my hand on the shift knob, i don't really do it, if at all so i don't think this is the case. i guess i will see when i bring it in.

i have a 2000 eclipse, different tranny and engine obv but this happens maybe once every two months to me too. I apply a tiny amount of pressure and it pops out of first and kinda catches me off guard. My clutch is on its last legs with about 90k miles so I assumed it was just the clutch doing funny things.

well last night i ran into keith(i think) from turbotrix at our local meet, and he has never seen this happen. Then, this morning i went to the dealership, and the evo tech there took a ride with me, and of coarse i could not duplicate the problem so i was kinda sol... however i did document it so if it starts to become a problem then it will be under warranty. As i am driving home, i then realize that sometimes the shifter doesn't go in all the way (prob about 3/4 i' going to say) and that is most likely the time that it is popping out. this only happens in first gear and is very hard to feel if its in ALL the way, so it makes sense. i guess i will continue to test this out, but for now thats what i have gathered.

Same thing happens to mine. It dosen't make a sound like your discribing, but it will pop out of first with a slight grab of the shifter. This also dosen't happen all the time, only once in a long while and usually when it's cold.
That's exactly what mine does. It happens in first and third once in a blue moon. My take on it is when you don't put the transmission 100% all the way in gear or don't "click it home" so to speak. I think that's what causes the issue.
Here is my experience....on a 96 Eclipse GSX
I put the car in first, and start to acceperate...I get to 3-4K and let off the gas...during deceleration, it then pops out of first gear...
This clearly isn't good, and had to replace the trans. This sounds very similar to the problem I was having. Hope this isn't the case though.
But I would DEFINITELY get it checked out!!

same thing here and yes another DSM. Non turbo talon it did it in reverse. Sold it before it needed a new trans. Gear was slowly starting to fad. CAN YOU SAY WARRANTY!!!! Take it back the the dealer asap.

yea ive basically come to this conclusion, and have tested it out. it is still difficult to tell if its all the way in, but i always double check... anyone know how to remedy this problem? some type of adjustment maybe?
