Spun Rod Bearing Question

Ok, I could really use some of you guys help on this one. I have a 2005 Evo and it spun a rod bearing. The machine shop that has the motor says they cannot find oversized bearings for this car. He says I need (Forgive me I don't understand this next part!) 20 under (.5) rod bearings - 4 parts / 10 under (.25) main bearings - 10 parts. That or he says I need a new crank. Any input guys? Also, if I had to replace my crank, any ideas on where to get a good deal on one? I have no idea cost on a crank, but I was thinking I might find somebody who did a stroker build and might have the stock crank. Thanks for the help guys!

Just a suggestion - I would not cut a crank

I would just toss it and buy a new one

+1 on not using a cut crank. Call AMS and ask them to sell you a used one. They have several from installing 2.4 cranks. You can use any 7bolt bearings. 95-99 DSM

I do believe that mitsu has several different bearings avalable for a stock crank. If you look on the underside of your block where the oil pan bolts to you will see some hash marks. Write those down and call your local mitsu parts guy that knows what he's doing and he will be able to walk you through it, if you are using mitsu bearings. Serveral people don't know this so im sure it will come up. I will have to explain a little more when I have more time.

There is a guy in the fs forum selling an EVO short block. May be an alternate solution for you. I would rather replace the bottom end with a used stocker than have some guy tear it apart and rebuild it. Price would be about the same if not cheaper going with the replacement block.

Be sure to have your head hot tanked and replace your oil cooler with a new one or uncontaminated used one. Leftover oil contamination in other parts takes out many new motors.

Just an idea but while the old crank is out maybe think about a stroker kit....while its all apart. I dont think a stock crank will be all that hard to find. Theres always someone either on here or elsewhere thats parting out a wrecker or something.

I don't want to do a stroker kit because I don't think I am going to keep the car. I recently purchased a 2006 Honda 1000rr and I am thinking about selling the car to save money. Turbo the bike! I will definitely have the head hot tanked and get a new oil cooler. I guess if you guys don't believe in repairing the crank, then I will go the other route. Thanks for the advice! If there is anything else let me know! Thanks guys!

call JAM, speak to carmella & she can help you out.

or look though this website:
http://www.store.partsdinosaur.com/page18.html

if your going for crazy hp numbers, just get a new crank, as the cost of a new crank isnt that much more than the maching work for the crank.

as far as using cut a crank, yeah you give up some integrity, due to loosing the surface hardening layer of the crank. i would try to get he crank nitrided again after machining.

But as far as "never using a cut crank", that is bs. Then i guess these guys only dated / married girls that were virgins / havent been touched.

I used a cut crank ONCE. I totally rebuilt a 420A out of a 2g using a "reman" .010 under crank kit. Plastigauged everything, assembled everything perfectly, car started eating a rod bearing within 20 miles.

We pulled the motor, hot tanked everything, ordered a new crank and bearing from the dealer and all was fine.

As much as I was against doing it in the first place, that was the first and LAST time I will EVER use a cut crank in a car.

Man I hate those oil coolers - its almost like they were designed to catch dirt
