272 vs 280
272 vs 280
I know this is opening a can of worms but, how much can you gain in the top end from swiching from a 272 to a 280????
Has anyone done this??
Is it worth it??
How much do you lose down low??
Need advice and help????

Buschur dynoed about a 15-20 Mustang WHP gain by just switching from HKS 272's to HKS 280's set straight up, on the stock turbo and with a stock head. He claimed that there was no loss in lowend power whatsoever.
You'd have to judge for yourself whether or not it's worth it. There are other factors to consider, such as, a funkier idle with the longer duration cams. Although I understand that some tuners can get them to idle pretty steady.
I've yet to see actual back to back dyno's on the 272's vs the 280's.
There are also ways to change top end power with just a set of cam gears, but then again there is also things to consider like springs and retainers. (not required on 280's but depending on which ones you get, its recommended)

Well, if funky idle doesn't concern you, and you want more topend, then get the HKS 280's. With a set of adj. camgears, you can move the powerband around to suit your taste.

i would say ~10 whp gain with the 280's.....is it worth it??? it's your call.
if your after max power, these cams deliver with oem valvetrain.
the transient response is worse in the lower revs with the 280's, but the car doesnt stumble or run like *** in anyway if tuned properly...i had hks 280 cams in my car before....i really liked the power performance, but didnt care for the loss in transient response......
i am waiting tfor the weather to cool down a bit to install some hks 280's to compare next to hks 272's...on the same road, same fuel...i have moved from my previous tuning road....135 miles away.
hks 280 cams hit hard @ 4k & pull hard as far as you care to rev your engine.
i have a dyno compare of hks 280/280 vs 272i/264e, but honestly, the dyno graph doent depict the power gain felt by the 280's.
in fact within aem, you can calculate power based on car acceleration & I tune my car on the same stretch of private road, so i do have a calculated power compare..
the calculated power compare feels like the gain that i got vs. the dyno chart.
the reason why the chart only goes to 7k, is due to me lifting @ 7,500- 7,700 & the calculation stops a bit short & the 272i/264e looks like it rolls over very hard.

ive asked this before but have not received a good answer, if one has either the 272s or the 280s tuned and drives at lets say 3000k on highway how will the mpg be? same as stock, better, worse and by how much. Im think of putting cams on my car but can compromise my mpg since i drive 60 miles a day

There is no such thing as a universal '272' or '280'. Those numbers don't mean much across different manufacturers. One '262' from one maker is more like a '280' from another, so one has to be more specific.
And finally, there are many factors that determine whatever hp difference (if any) that can be realized between two different cams. Ditto that for fuel economy.
