Which Turbo will spool faster ...
Hi guys,
I know I have not had many posts, but spend more time on the Aus version of this forum ...
My problem is this ........
(just a quick background: I own a EV0 6 - Jap Spec - with the following mods:- HKS 272 Cams, Monster Intake, Monster Intercooler Pipping, EVO 9 RS Turbo, Tomei Headers, Tomei Cam Gears, Bosch Motor Sport Pump, TEIN Super Street Coilovers, WhiteLine Swaybars, HKS Oil Cooler, Cusco Catch Can, Billion Hoses, B&M short shift gear selector, GFB dual BOV, PWR Radiator, Custom 3" Exhaust & Dump, Work CR Crai 18x8.5+32 Wheels, MOTEC M800 ECU. - The car currently makes over 200kw@the wheels on pump fuel.)
to drive my car is awsome, it has tremendous pull down low. But like most, I am chasing more power. I want to achieve over 300kw @ the wheels on pump fuel.
The reason I'm asking you guys, A) dont really want anyone in AUS to know what I'm doing B) Everyone in AUS says it cant be done, especially the result I want.
C) You guys have probably bolted one of the Turbo's I want on your car...
You see I want over 300 kw, but I dont want to loose the low down grunt I have. Also it needs to be a bolt on unit, everything on my car is JDM bolt on !!! There are many turbo's available here in AUS, and many guys doing big turbo's, well over 300, but they are all so laggy, you may aswell go grab a coffee before the thing spools ... and all of them are running custom inlet, and intercooler piping etc..
I have heard that a HKS turbo can do this, and especially a Kansai Service incarnation. So I am looking at a Kansai Service Turbo ...

Were talking about power, so we don't need to discuss what type of tires or swaybars you have.
You want 300kw, which is right about 400hp. We'll assume that you are speaking of hp as measured on a Dyno Dynamics dyno, but it what mode? It makes a difference.
'Everyone' says it can't be done. Well, that depends upon what turbo you plan to use and how the power measured.
Several comments I have:
(1) Don't be dazzled by buzzwords like "Kansai Service". We don't care what they call it, only what it really is and how it stacks up in the real world.
(2) If I were going to throw that much money at a turbo kit, I darn well wouldn't be spending it on something that is hindered by the convenience of making it a 'bolt-on' item.
(3) If you want a truly bolt-on item, have you considered the FP Green turbo that is very popular here? It costs far less, is less laggy than the turbos you are considering, and may very well give you what your looking for.
And lastly, have you considered other upgrades that will help you? Upgrades such as IC, better cams, headwork, and such?

Several comments I have:

With the same amount of money you'd throw down getting fancy HKS Kansai Service turbo kit, you can buy stroker kits from respectable companies (2.2 or 2.3), FP green turbo, larger throttle body, o2 housing then port and ceramic coat them.
Sell your Monster Sport intercooler piping kit and get a nice FMIC with much shorter pipings (along with smaller battery).
Also get a straight pipe if you're running some cat.
It is not necessary but if possible, sell your HKS cam and get Cosworth. JUN cam might be too aggressive for small fast-spooling turbo. Stay 272 for a good balance between power/response.
Do you have a boost controller? If not get one and jack up the boost to 23psi. Or you can get race gas or meth kit and raise it even more.
Lastly get the car tuned from respectable tuner. Since you have a MoTec unit, I'm sure you can find plenty in Australia.
You'll need fuel pump and larger injectors as well as a tune for running higher boost + bigger turbo.

Some guys are mentioning Race Gas or Meth kits. Thats all good, but I am chasing this power, as a everyday driver. Therefore Pump Fuel only, 98 RON. Thats what we got here. If I was to run the car on Race gas or Meth everyday, it would cost a FORTUNE in Australia ...

HKS are Garrett turbo's. However you can not get a Garrett equivalent of a HKS turbo. HKS have a contract with Garrett and all HKS turbos are under special patent. Therefore, even if Garrett boast a specific Garrett turbo is the same as a specific HKS turbo, there really not the same. This is what makes HKS so special, they have a secret patent on there compressor and exhaust wheels which allows the HKS turbo to spool much faster, and produce power through the REV range...
I have heard of tunning shops doing side by side comparisons, with so called Garrett and HKS equivalents. The HKS turbo blows the garrett out of the water, with overall power produced and when the power comes on, to when it drops off.
Is this just a myth ??? why are we paying so much more for HKS? theres got to be a reason ???

he wants quick spool and is a bolt on guy dont send him that way yea you can make over 400hp easy on pump with a 35 or 37 but the fast spool on his 2.0 is not gonna happen the green will get you fast spool close to your stock and make the numbers your after and still save you money thats my 2 cents i dont have one but i drive my buddies all the time
I don't understand what you are calling bolt-on? Those hks kits look like garret gt series turbos on aftermarket equal length exhaust manifold.... If that is what you consider bolt on, then there are plenty of bolt on kits out there. AMS, buschur, ets, etc etc.
I have a FPGreen on my car with stock ported manifold making around 320 on our uncorrected dynodynamics. Good turbo for pump gas boost but it's better with meth and higher boost.
I think TedB is correct, the hks kits are good, but cost way more than they are worth.

I have a 2.3L stoker with the AMS 35r and i'm at full boost at about 3800rpm. I made 526awhp on 22psi. Really once your in boost, and going through the gears the car has really no lag at all. I mean you have to give up one thing to get the other in most cases.... smaller turbo less lag..... Bigger turbo more lag, but more power..... I'm really happy with what I have..... Really just depends on what you want to do in the long run....
Those other blokes in Australia are probably already knowing what you plan to do, since they read this forum too. Just don't get one of those overpriced HKS "Kansai" turbo kits since they are too slow spooling anyway.
The Forced Performance EvogGreen turbo equipped with a 9.0 cm turbine housing instead of the standard 10.5 cm housing, should maintain the quick spool characteristics of your IX RS turbo, while at the same time providing increased topend power.
