Straight VIII vs. MR Tranny

Iv been searching for a few hours and I don't know if I'm just missing this somewhere or what but f someone can point me to were I can find the pros/cons of each or just tell me which one is better and why.

Iv heard the 5 speed is stronger then the 6 but havent seen any numbers or anything to verify. Iv also heard the 6 speed shifts smoother due the teflon coated cables.

Please any help is much appreciated.

A basic break drown:
The five speed is stronger than the 6 (4th,5th and 6th gears on the 6speed are smaller than the rest)
Both Transmission if beaten on will break. If you plan on doing basic boltons and driving with some sanity, you should have no problems with the 6speed. Plus 6th would be nice for milage. If you wanna track the car, i would stay clear of the 6speed or have money put back to relplace with a built 5 speed. Just my $.02

There are a ton of threads on this, with most of them saying the 6-speed is junk ---- which is simply not the case. I've only witnessed 3 or so 6-speed "tranny-failure" threads on here, for what it's worth.

The 6 speed is just as durable as the 5 in the lower gears because they are (I'm told) identical, but due to space constraints in the 6-speed case --- one of the higher gears --- 5th gear, I believe --- is physically thinner than you'd expect, and is subsequently vulnerable to overheating under extreme duress.

That is the only weakness indigenous to the 6-speed that I'm aware of.

If you look around, you'll see WAY more 5-speeds breaking from overconfidence and abuse. But then again, they're being told they're "nigh" indestructible, so it's to be expected.

The sixth speeds ratio isn't much better than the 5er. If you want a 6 for mileage, its not worth it.

Its fourth gear that everyone seems to break on everyone. And 4,5,6 are all thinner than 1,2,3...

The 6 speed is fine, but if you want to Drag race, look into having the "5 speed" 4th gear put into it. That way its beefier and its a better gear for racing so that you dont have to shift into fifth.

Gears 1, 2, and 3 are bigger (wider) on the 6 speed vs. the 5 speed. Gears 4, and 5 (along with 6) are thinner on the 6 versus the 5. A majority of problems seem to occur with 4th gear + heat, although some have experienced issues even with a tranny cooler.

TRE has now started shot-peening gears in the 6 speed. This is supposed to increase their longevity.

On a side note, I have 85,000+ miles on my 6 speed and am now running close to 400whp.

^ The 6 speeds don't get any better mileage than the 5 speeds.

Gearing of MR and EVO9 sucks for anything needing speeds greater than 110. So drag racers and road racers both want the EVO8 4th gear.

The MR trannies have had many failures. Here is a great read..... BTW TRE screen name is Gears.

How hard is it to drop the 5 speed in place of the 6 speed?

The 5 speed has fewer issues than the 6 speed. Although, IMO, the best transmission is a 5 speed, that uses a combination of gears from the 5 and 6 speed. Considering that most competing (drag, time attack, SCCA) Evos run a 5 speed should be indication enough of which one is ultimately better.

x2

the mr 6th gear gives you MAYBE 200rpm lower at cruise compared to the 5 speed.

the 6 speed is fun to drive with, but if you are making more power then stock you probably want the 5 speed for strength and if you are a weekend drag racer, it has better gearing, you finish in 4th instead of 5th, less shifting = less time you aren't putting any power to the ground.

Doing a SEARCH using the aforementioned button would aid you immensely, as there are plenty of threads dealing with the subject.

EDIT: I get a major FAIL for not reading that the OP had already tried this initially. My bad.

As I mentioned I had already spent a few hours searchign the original subject which proved fruitless. I figured since I had already made this thread and had some feedback on the subject I would ask here since I had already spent a lot of time playing nwith the search.

But thank you for takin the time outta your day to respond in a way that didnt benefit me, instead using that time to try and make me feel stupid.
