FP guys: I had a little conversation with Jeremy at PTE a couple days ago. He seems like a pretty with-it guy but he said one strange thing - He said "nobody in the world mills turbine wheels out of a billet".
So tell me, this pic posted by GrocMax, this is going to be a turbine wheel when the milling machine gets done with it, right?

Thanks,
Gary

So if my HKS 272/272 cams are crap, worth replacing them to support a Red even if I have MIVEC and where would i see gains from doing so?

Also, would MIVEC tuining be able to smoothen out the spool or would the benefit be mostly at the mid-to-high end?

They'd have to be really substabtial gains to justify the cost but just askin

The picture does not show a turbine wheel "milled out of billet". It shows a casting, before the machining steps are done.

Talonboost--

FP's comp wheels are cnc'd from billet aluminum. The turbine wheel (pictured) is cast steel which is subsequently machined & ground to final geometry.

On a design-related note I'd be leery about the cast-in logo acting as a stress riser in the turbine wheel's backdisk...

Ok that's what I thought. Jeremy knew about machined billet aluminum compressor wheels but he didn't know anybody was making machined billet steel turbine wheels.
Yeah that pic from grocmax looks like a casting of some ferrous alloy, sure doesn't look like an aluminum casting, and it has 11 blades which would be a lot for a compressor wheel but normal for a turbine wheel.
Now if these things are ground to final geometry, that is an operation I would like to see some video of. I've seen grinding of cylinders, spheres, flats, surfaces of revolution, and ruled surfaces, but I highly doubt that the final blade shape on this thing is all ruled surfaces.

There ARE billet turbine wheels. They are uber expensive.

I'm gonna recant that after breaking a stock spring early saturday AM. No evidence of loft, bounce or surge but its obviously happening if a spring breaks. Keep the RPM's lower than we did with stock springs, cumulative spring surge effects over time will weaken them. I wanted to find the limits, and did.

So what sort of applications are these billet turbines found in, GrocMax? Is it rally racing, Drags, custom Porshes, or what? Thanks, just curious!

Well, maybe, but the OEM's ALL grind or mill that area for balancing.

One-offs, design verification etc.

The precision molds for those things are very expensive.
If you are making one or a dozen its cheaper to whittle, if you are making hundreds or thousands make the molds.

Erik: Are you building a C.A.R.B., "legal appearing", Red-equipped, terror engine, for your Apex Silver VIII?

CARB wouldn't like it if they knew what I was doing, but it will appear "stock" for all parties involved

Red is definitely going to be a part of things...just have to finish up some MIL.SPEC projects
