Found damage in my head- is it a problem
Pulled the head off today and there is some damage to the cams and cam guides. The worst of the damage is on the front of the motor on the end of head, (closest to the cam gears). There are grooves in the metal and it is pretty roughed up. I am not sure how big of an issue this is. I am wondering if I can smooth out the damaged areas and be OK. I know this his is a result from the low oil pressure that caused the bearing damage.
I'll definitely get some pics up tomorrow. I think things should be fine, I just want to make sure I am not going to have problems with the head. I am going to be putting the head on a new AMS 2.3rr and want to make sure everything is perfect. Loosing a timing belt or something else would not be good after investing in the RR!!
I would definitely take it to a machine shop to give it a quick look, pictures aren't going to tell the whole story. You might as well get it fully checked out by a pro before installing that bottom end.

well if it makes a grove to where your fingernail could catch..then yah its bad. Some cases the cam can be saved but its a long down time.
Some pics will help us for sure to determine if its a low oil issue. Plus it wouldnt hurt to check the Valve springs on a Spring compressor( I dont have the specs, the spring makers would have that), But that would ensure the springs are in good working order.

although judging in person is better, pics would be good...it can be expensive to weld, bore and hone cam journals though. Almost, if not the same cost to you as buying a good used head..
