Unhappy Engine sounds....paranoia?

Guys, I have a sound that I've heard recently that is really bugging me. Now, I know most evo's have loud injectors/lifters as well. But this sound is louder than what those are.

Some background:

Oil level is fine and recently changed in the past couple weeks.

Sound only occurs when the car is fully warmed up or has been driven for awhile.

The sound ONLY comes when I'm in neutral. If I tap the gas slighly, it'll make about 4-8 quick clicking sounds in about 1-2 seconds as the engine returns to idle. When it returns to idle, it goes away. It only seems to make the sound between 800-2000rpms...any higher and it's not noticable.

Maybe I'm paranoid and never really paid that much attention to is and maybe it's normal?

There are absolutely no other symptoms. The car seems to pull hard like normal. So maybe it's just me, but I'd like some input on what it possibly may be?

Thanks!

Exhaust leak or crack? Do you have tubular manifold? Check everything very thoroughly.

Nope, no cams, just intake/exhaust/mbc/tune.

If it was an exhaust or exhaust manifold leak, wouldn't it make the sound when it's cold though too?

Does the sound go away when you press in the clutch? I race auto cross too and after one run i knoticed that my car was making what i thought to be lower end knock. I think it my be some thing with the evo tranny and clutch. Mine only happends when my car is warmed up and around the same RPMs you mentioned!

I use the same oil as I always have, mobil 1.

I'm leaning towards the exhaust leak idea, because now when I let off the gas going about 5-10mph, it makes a whistle type sound...like something is leaking air....

No, because even when the clutch is depressed, it still makes the sound whether I'm in neutral, or in gear slowly starting off.

My clutch is on the way out...69,000 miles and it finally slipped yesterday at the autocross FYI...

Well, I took a peek under the hood tonite after work, and I noticed around the flange of the exhaust manifold, it appears to be darker...almost wet like... Must be the gasket? Does it look wet because of eithe unburnt fuel or carbon??

Hopefully this solves my problem because spoolup is not as hard/quick as previously...
