Tranny Noise??

Need some advice on possibly getting my Tranny diagnosed by you guys, and was hoping you could answer some questions for me. I brought my car into the dealer to have a strange grinding/whirring noise investigated as I thought it was a Wheel Bearing starting to go. After having all 4 wheels Road-Force Balanced, and all 4 wheel bearings checked … the Dealership decided to use Chassis Ears to help pinpoint the noise. They came back to me saying that the Transmission and Rear Diff are making an unusual amount of noise, and are most likely the culprit. They are saying it is most likely the Bearings inside the Tranny that are on their way out. I have had absolutely no issues shifting, and I’m basically wondering if I should go through the expense of having my tranny rebuilt, or just let it go. I’m always very leery of trusting the Mitsu Dealers.

How do I know this isn't coming from my TC?? No Death Whine BTW.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

When does it make the noise? Driving, idling, acceleration or decel? If idling does it do it when you depress the clutch pedal or does it only do it while your foots off of the pedal?

It makes the noise consistently, but only when I'm moving ... sound goes away at idle. It seems to speed up and slow down with the speed of the wheels, not with RPMs. Pushing in the clutch doesn't seem to make a difference with the noise.

Thats odd from what I've seen alot of these trannys have input shaft bearing problems which can be heard on decel and at idle. When was the last time you had your tranny serviced? Out of curiosity does the tone and or pitch of the noise change if you swerve the car left to right (slowly)?

Just did my 30k service about 3 weeks ago, and that seemed to have triggered these noises. I had all my fluids double-checked by a very reputable shop that specializes in Evos, and everything is fine. Swerving does not increase the noise any. Almost sounds like a chirping sound that increases in tempo with the speed of the wheels.

I put a clutch in a VIII not too long ago he had a "chirping" noise and it was the release bearing but, the noise changed when the clutch pedal was depressed so its kinda hard to say man.

I used all OEM fluids, so I don't think that is the issue. The dealer did say that it was most likely the tranny bearings, so maybe they were onto something.

i think i have the exact same problem..

for me it happens only in first gear though. the whining noise sounds like what PPG gears would make. it becomes increasingly loud as the rpms increases and goes away once i clutch in.

second onwards is fine with no sounds at all. i can shift with no problems, etc..

i spend a crapload of money to drop the tranny and open it up to have it inspected by a local workshop and they said everything was fine. gears in good cond with no chips, transfer case OK, everything OK..

not sure what the problem is.. it's not affecting anything but it just bugs me that the whine is there in first gear.

any professionals have any thought on the matter?

thanks!

btw, i'm running the ogura twin plate clutch..

Is there anyway of ruling out the Transfer Case, or should I just send both the tranny and TC to TRE for a rebuild??

If you hear whining in first and second gears on take off and slow cruising situation thats pretty normal for the EVO. This is in the gear not the TC

Most every EVO I have been in will whine 1rst and 2nd at least at low load low rpm. 104k on my 03 and its done it since the begining. Not saying that a rebuild wont cure it up for a while but it def normal
