The official 6-speed failure thread

It seems like a fairly often occurrence when someone in the market for an VIII or IX makes a thread here asking about the 6-speed. You know, just how "bad" is it compared to the 5-speed? And invariably, that person will get lots of posts from people either telling him to stay away from the 6-speed like the plague and lots of posts from 6-speed owners telling him they love their cars. This happens every time.

It seems like a good idea to me to have a more scientific way of ascertaining just how problematic the 6-speed has been for the Evo community. Hence this thread.

If you have/had a 6-speed and it failed on you, please post in the following format:

- username
- VIII or IX MR
- Mileage when failure occurred
- Approximate wheel horsepower and wheel torque when failure occurred and what type of dyno (if stock/stockish, just say that)
- What failed (4th gear, for instance)
- Cause/circumstances of failure (road racing, drag racing, street, etc.)
- Did you take any special measures to prevent this failure? (Oil cooler, etc.)

If, on the other hand, you have/had a 6-speed and have had no (major) problems, please post in the following format:

- username - current mileage - approximate whp/wtq and type of dyno (or stock) - if you race, specify road/drag - oil cooler (only if it applies to you)

I will begin the list in the second post and update it as often as I can. Hopefully this will help shed some more light on the 6-speed's tendency (or lack thereof) to fail. If anyone has any ideas about how I could improve the list to make it more helpful, I'm all ears.

Mods, this might be a good sticky if I get the feedback I'm hoping I will. Maybe in the Engine / Turbo / Drivetrain forum if not General?

Thanks in advance for your contributions.

400WHP (MD), 30,050 miles, ACT clutch. A "few" drag passes and dyno sessions. No grinding or slipping, and shifts like a champ. Stock oil cooler, only mitsu fluids (changed 3 times).

Wes get in here!

Thanks, I've read a good deal of that thread. I wanted to make a more organized database.

btw the torque is what kills the 6speed. I would suggest listing torque as well in replies

I think in my case it was excessive heat and no-lift shifting
did about 5 passes without letting the car cool down lol

52k miles - 3 yrs ago, conservative tune, i made 301/295 @ 20psi on a dynojet... right now i would assume around 320/320 @ 23psi with buschur licp and o2 dump. this is my DD and i am on my 3rd clutch (two oem clutch crapped out. currently using ACT XT w/ street disc.) tranny fluid changed 3 times. stock oil cooler. have went to the drag strip maybe 4 or 5 times. replaced t-case @ 35k miles, 1 year later after doing donuts on dry pavement.

Silver06evo9mr - 61,000 miles - 325 whp / 331 wtq (dynojet) - DD and drag car, Has been driven the hell out of since day one. Replace T case due to lanching car many many times on stock clutch.

05 MR 330hp/300tq. Rebuilt at 30,000 miles. Previous owner abuse. About to be swapped for a 5 spd @ 55,000 miles. Trans grinds in 3rd and 4th. Bad synros... overly aggressive clutch+aggressive driving+no lift shifting+drag launching.
