When do our trannys go boom!?
What's the "magic" number for the VIII 5sp trannies? I know with most subaru's it's in the 300-350 range but after how much hp will I grab air in second gear when it goes bang?
The only time that our trannies goes boom is when you launch it and usually the first thing that goes boom is the transfer case.
Well, there's also the case of having like 750+whp, then yeah eventually is going to give up on ya.

You mean WRX trannies giving up at 300? Because I always heard the STi trannies were "bullet proof". Evo trannies are stout and it all depends on how many mis shifts and speed shifts happen. There are plenty of guys running 500+ on stock trannys.

no magic number. have to keep up with fluid changes and depends on how much abuse you put through it launching and no lift shifting...
I made 460whp/ 430 tq on my old setup 2 years ago went 11.3 @ 125, and this year made approx 600whp / 520 tq and went 10.7 @ 135. Countless runs at the track in the last 3 years and the stock tranny is still kickin!! I have had a couple quartermaster clutches rebuilt though.
good luck on your build

They go boom when someone doesn't know how to drive them for the power they are making. You can't shift an Evo like a civic and drop the clutch and expect it to live for long, even in stock form. An Evo, being AWD, puts a lot more stress on the drive train than a peg leg front wheel drive car does or even a posi front wheel drive because usually the FWD will break traction before the tranny breaks.
Speed shifting and dumping the clutch is the worst thing you can do for our transfer cases and transmissions.
Bottom line, slip the clutch and save the tranny and transfer case. When the stock clutch fails, replace it with a good twin disc or similar.

Eaxctly....which is my case with 83,000 miles and VERY hard driving and lots of WOT shifting...good clutch, good maintnance and good driving will make them last a long time with upwards of 500hp. I have a slightly and occasionally notchy 4th gear...synchro may be getting tired...Is the 4th gear synchro single or double?
yeah the wrx trannies suck but the STi 6 speed is dam good. I remember reading somewhere that it was designed in collaboration with Porsche.
