Can you guys help me out a bit, I tried searching but I didn't really find what I was looking for. I am looking into doing adjustable cam gears, and I want to know what the differences are between the cheaper gears and the more expensive ones. Which gears is everyone running? Also do the cam shafts need to be removed to change out the gears? Thanks in advance

 

I went with Fidanza as a bunch of high HP builds use them and I can't justify the $400 for HKS when the Fidanza cam gears were $209 shipped.

 

/\ Thats why I am asking, why do the HKS gears cost double? I see that AMS sells the Fidanza, AEM and HKS gears, are there any differences besides cost and color?

Cost and color are about the only differences. HKS is sometimes spelled HK$ for a reason I'd personally go for the Fidanza gears.

Thanks for the info guys, I bought a set of used fidanza's from the 4 sale section, I am glad I didn't spend too much money on something pointless like HK$ gears. Now I can put money towards other things.

 

I like the AEM gears as I think that those have internally threaded steel inserts while the others have the threads simply cut into the aluminum gear itself.

EDIT: I searched after making this post and apparently I was wrong about the threaded inserts. I don't know what I was thinking about(Duh!). I guess the reality of being the oldest active EvoM member is taking its toll on me.

 

I have the Vishnu adjustable cam gears and they are top notch. They have 5 hold down bolts to help keep the cam gears from slipping out of adjustment. I believe your Findanza's has the same. The HKS only has 3 bolts to secure the cam gear adjustment. I also applied some locktite to the bolt threads as some extra insurance from the bolts loosening.

 

hks gears are nice.....they are easy to read.

aems are nice to + they use larger hardware to clamp the gear to the sprocket.

fidenza's are good. just be certain to line up the "0" mark, then hold a oem cam gear & verify the correct dowel hole is marked evo. you jsut need to line up the holes & cog's. look through the dowel pin hole & you will be able to tell if everything is ok.

a while back, i did an install for someone, they bought "ebay no-name fidenza's"....the dowel holes were not marked & both dowel holes had the same offset!! no kidding.....they were off by ~3 or 4 degrees.

regardless, its cheap insurance to lay the new units over the oem 1's & give it a look.

i prefer the fidenza's over the vishnu units because button head screws are notorious for rounding out within the hex.....fidanza's have the same screw, but turned around & you have to use a 8mm or 5/16 socket for the nut to make adjustments....

i know hks gears dont require cam gear clearancing..fidanza's do...not sure about aem or vishnu

 

I wore out a set of Vishnu gears after about 60k miles. I guess I can't complain, but I replaced them with a set of Skunk2 Pro-Series gears, which are made from the harder 7075 alloy as opposed to the usual 6065.
