Gear Noise... Please help!

For the past few months I've been hearing a noise that is getting increasingly louder coming from just under the back seat of my Evo IX MR. It sounds distinctively like the gears moving. As I drive faster, it is higher pitched. Of note, the noise is exclusive of the car being in gear. I have taken it out of gear and just let the car coast at varying speeds. It's not the "death whine" as I've heard this noise before. It really just sounds like the gears whining together. I'm going to get it checked out but wanted to know if any of you have experienced this or not. I have 60K miles and have never had the transmission serviced. Please don't bash!

Brad

I have an 06 IX MR with 76,000 and recently had mine serviced by Mitsubishi, but I still have a slight whine from the rear end. It's more noticible at 60 mph than at any other speed.

That's nice roadspike...and if I want to wait til my timing belt snaps I suppose that's my business. This is a thread that was generated to seek advice from other people with the anticipation that I'd be asked if I've had my trans/diff serviced... I have not, so I was answering that question before it was asked. I hesitated to even post in here because I know some people like to thread hop and and boost their own egos by putting other people down... I'm sure in some twisted way it makes you feel better... so post on in your anonymous trailer park and throw your trash somewhere else!

BTW the problem I had was related to worn out wheel bearings on both sides... I don't suppose there's a service agenda for that...but if there was, I missed it that too! Trans and diff were serviced so now I'll just wait for my timing belt to snap...I'll know where not to come if that happens!
