Shaft play on new FP Red???
Shaft play on new FP Red???
So i just got my car tuned and of course ive been boosting. I do have some boost leaks mostly from the HKS BOV, and today i was going to put on the APS. Well i took off my K&N, and i wanted to see how the turbo felt. so i got ahold of the compressor wheel and was going to see if it had any play and it does. Not alot but it does. I know my stock turbo went out when i had little shaft play. So of course im worried. I just bought this turbo. I just put the first couple hundred miles on it.
Yeah i did. and the first time i ran it i did spool it. See i put the turbo on. and it sat in my shot for like 1 month and i never ran it becuz i was puttin more things on. Well i drove and got mellon to tune it ( he did a GREAT job thanks Mellon ) and i drove it back home. everything sounds really good and runs even better. so maybe im just paranoid and think somethings wrong and there really isnt.

I've never even seen an FPRed, but I've used and repaired hundreds of turbos...all have some play, if they didn't the oil couldn't flow through and they'd seize the moment they heat up. Remember the shafts doesn't contact the bearings - the run on a thin layer of oil, which is only half there when the motor is turned off and the hot oil runs out of the turbo.
Usually when I install a turbo which has been sitting around (and there fore may have lost film of oil) I'll either blow oil through it with a little tool I may for my air compressor, or I'll pull the plugs to the ignition coils (or unplug fuel pump) and just turn the motor over for 10 or 15 seconds..that gets the oil into the turbo to avoid dry start-up
