Wicked Twin Disk Rattling
First I want to say that this is not engagement chatter/squeaking.
This issue, is an issue I've had ever since day 1 after having AMS install a new Shep Built trans and Exedy Twin HD clutch in my '05 Evo.
It makes a rattling/knocking noise when the clutch is engaged and the pedal is not depressed. When I put my clutch in, the noise goes away completely. I have talked to the man, shep, about this and he said that it is very odd and that he has never seen this. Every twin disk he has every seen rattles (the same way I describe) at a stop light with the clutch in. I have had AMS check this problem out more than once and they tell me that its normal, not an issue and nothing can be done about it.
This problem has gotten worse over time and is now at the point where it makes my car sound like a beater, for lack of a better word. Its embarrassing when driving my customers around or driving in traffic/ sitting at a stop light. Not too professional.
Its so bad that I'm honestly thinking about ditching the twin disk for a single plated clutch if I cannot find a solution to my problem, which would totally suck. Looking back, I spent around $3800 ($1750 on the clutch, about $600 on labor, $50+ on fluid, $895 for the trans rebuild and had the clutch line and motor mount done at the same time ~$250, Plus 7% sales tax) I'm not ecstatically happy about the transaction.
Can people share their experience on the subject? Did you have this problem? Was it ever fixed? The point of this thread is to possibly better help me understand my situation and what can possibly be done about it.
Thanks in advance to anyone who is helpful.
Justin

I have the twin disk and stock drivetrain and mine does it too. It used to only chatter when the clutch was pushed in but now its louder when its not engaged. Not sure what happened and afaik everything still functions normally. Sorry I can't help, if you figure it out lmk.

Mine was loud and rattly with the clutch not pushed in immediately after installation. Not sure what to think. I will let you know if I find an answer, although it might be a different cause.
i have the same noise maybe not a rattle but i hear somthing moving when im at stop lights if i push in the clutch while im sitting there the noise goes away, i just changed all my fluids i thought that might help, plus they needed to be done but still makes the same noise
Hmm. It should definitely rattle when disengaged, but mine never rattled when engaged. That just doesn't sound right - something must be loose. Looking forward to others' opinions on this.
Have you tried asking AMS or Exedy about this? Haven't dealt with AMS customer service, but Exedy was excellent when I contacted them a few years ago. They even paid to have the clutch shipped back to them for inspection, gave me a report (installer made a few mistakes) and provided me with details on how to easily fix it for use or sale. They were awesome with their customer service.
(PS - I sold the Exedy twin and ultimately went with an ACT HDSS).

i also have no idea if this is an aftermarket clutch since i bought the car used from a dealer, it holds good but grinds if i drive hard and shift hard into 3rd only, very strange
Mine rattles a little.... not that noticable that I would swap it out for my oem or any other single disk..... Honestly my AMS TBE exghaust defiantly covers up the rattling! I do not have a rebuilt trans however I do have the AMS front trans. motor mount.....

I have talked with AMS multiple times, but I felt brushed off and quickly dismissed. I have contacted Ivan @ AMS via PM. Hopefully he can shed light on the situation.
I never even thought to contact Exedy, but I think I will do that. Thanks for the idea.
Also, I am afraid of the possibility that there was an error, afterall we are all human. The problem with that, is its going to cost me $500 and guarantees me nothing.
After re-reading your post, I understand you talked to AMS. They don't sound like much help - either that or they didn't quite understand what you were describing. I'm wondering if there are other things that might come into play on this, like a loose flywheel bolt? Again, others more experienced would need to chime in...
Surprised at AMS's response - they have a good rep, but then again I attempted to ask them some pre-sales questions via email and never got a response, so....

I've got to believe the fact it rattles when engaged and doesn't when you're disengaged means it's something outside of your discs, like a throwout bearing or flywheel bolt or something like that, but I could be wrong. When the clutch is engaged all those plates are mashed against the flywheel and aren't loose. It's when you disengage that the plates get some free space and start jingling on the spindle due to engine vibration.
I have the same rattle with a Tilton Twin Disk.
I think it has to do with the fact that it is a Twin Disk and due to the weight of the flywheel. I don't remember the exact weights but i know the flywheel you have now is much lighter than stock.
The noise when the clutch is pushed in is due to having two clutch disk not engaged so you hear the sound.
I also have the annoying *ss sound at deceleration or when the car is cruising at part throttle or no throttle. I know its common with Twin Disk style clutches. I also know the sound tends to vary from car to car.
The only good thing is the clutch performs but it is in no way a daily drive able clutch.
p.s. not the most mechanical and correct response but i hope you get the idea.
