The most cost effective answer is stock turbo and E85 at 28-30psi. If money is no object, then EVORed turbo on E85 at 20-22psi; however, the spool-up will be much later.

Thanks for the advise man, but i just read ur "E85 hints and tips" and it seems like its alot of maintenance required by switching to E85. even tho the gains are great, not sure if its pretty safe running such a high boost on a stock block. but again that's why iam having this thread.
Thanks

reliability goes hand in hand with price tags....

the 400hp range (regardless of how its achieved) is a time bomb on stock internals.

This is not to say its not possible, and its been done many times, many ways. But the long term effects are the same, eventually the rods give out, or rings.

IF you are trying to reach 400, and stay there, i would suggest you find a set of drop-in piston/rods you like, along with head studs and gasket (while your in there) and have that done before considering the turbo combo.

But again, Im the kinda guy that does stuff before its needed rather than a getting by "it will work" kinda guy.

would be a waste of a red because you wont be able to get the most out of it with stock internals.I think im over 400 right now with my mods and i dont have a red.

what would my whp/wtrq numbers be if iam maxing out the red? if it can do 400 without maxing it out and not running high boost then iam good to go!

Red is a big turbo meant for 30psi of boost, with that being said, you are looking at mid to high 400s in hp and tq on built internals in order to be safe.

take it as you will; but I have an e316g on my stock motor csm...(1.6liter version of a dsm motor)
I run e85 and the evo3 turbo to between 34-37psi, I have ran this for a year and a half, my car was in the 125-128mph in the quarter by racing other cars that were running these times. this motor was also reving to 8800rpm. I had a rod bolt fail and have since replaced the motor to a dsm 2.0 (also stock.)

The car ran very strong and the powerband was great with the 1.6 and is even better with the 2.0.

e85 is very forgiving and you can make a ton of power with it.

When I pulled the blown motor everything looked great except the broke bolt. bearings, valves, head and cylinders everything else was great.

I would run e85 and the smaller turbo, it is great not having any lag, the turbo(e316g similar to your stock evo turbo) makes boost from 3100-3200 all the way to readline 8800. And i never get any knock.

You may want to replace the rodbolts with arp's though, I have this on my to do list.
this is my 2bits worth. ;-)

^ thanks for the tips man.
ya i have been hearing quite a bit on those motors handling much psi. i haven;t started modding my car still doing my dd, and unfortunatly i won't be able to play with my car anytime soon cuz iam selling due to the economy. but the one thing i have trying to figure out is which set up would be the best to achieve great power without causing much heat. whether its a small turbo with high boost or bigger turbo with low boost. still researching. hopfuly one day i will some examples, and see how they compare.
Thanks

easy answer...the red

making the engine work EXTREMELY hard and running almost 30psi to produce 400whp on the Stock turbo vs running 19 psi and hitting 400whp with a red

end of story..

it is much safer to run low psi , not so many backpressure !!
get the red cuz if got bored of 400HP you can get some more of that turbo

btw, I can't help myself...I am from bloomfield, I fricking love the pistons, bad *** screename!

anyway, bigger turbo and lower boost to achieve your desired power is much easier on the engine...now you have to find what kind of powerband you want, yes the 4g63t is very strong, but over 500whp, nothing lasts long...look for a red or hta3076 or bbk full(there is a value pack that ets? sells iirc for the hta 3076) and tune for 400-450 whp, you will have little lag and a very wide powerband

kudos to asking a good question piston fan!
