When my alternator went out, the battery light came on along with the "brake" light. Eventually, the car would die while driving down the street.

I would check the battery. I know what you're talking about, like it takes a lot of power to run the headlights. Fully charge the battery, if it still does it try replacing it. Or get one of those voltage tester things they use at autozone with the needle, and track down where the weak charge is in the power system. Check fuses too.

with the car running use a multi-meter to check the voltage at the battery. If its lower than 13.0-13.5 than its your alternator. also check the fuse on the positive terminal at the battery because the 100 amp fuse there is for the alternator and they sometimes can blow out!

Where is the fuse exactly on the positive terminal? Is it the one that has the plastic cover on it?

If you don't mind me asking, what's the mileage on your car? My alternator just started crapping out and I 'm wondering when these alternators usually go out.
