7437 RPM's!
7437 RPM's!
I was running my car hard tonight in some minor twisties. The air temp was like 50 degrees so the thing was haulling ***. I have the SAFCII. When I came to a light, I pushed up on the control button and saw that my highest rev point was 7437 rpms! Is this bad? Whay is the rev limit so low if the car keeps pulling so damn hard? What the hell is the rev limiter set at anyhow?
The rev limiter is in place to protect your valvetrain and engine in general. Without proper tuning I imagine you'd be up ****'s creak trying to exceed the factory rev limiter by too much.
That's not the scarry one. I think I rev passed 8000 yesterday. I hit the fuel cut and my car jerks.
I was entering the freeway and trying to get myself on a less traffic lane. I saw I hit ~ 8000rpm on 3rd gears. The car jerks and slow down. While I quickly shift to 4th and the speed of the car pick up again.
My car still running. No problem. I think I need to get a tach with warning buzz and light soon.

A fuel based Rev limiter (which i have never really liked), effectively LEANS out your engine in order to cause the revs to drop. So you are cranking 8K and bounce of the rev limiter, once is not a big deal. Enough times in a short time frame and you can burn a piston, especially at those kind of revs.
Mitsu protects to some extent with an insanely rich fuel curve, but if you have aftermarket items to trim your fuel curve closer to the 14:1 that is stoiametrically (sp?) correct, and then bounce the rev limiter, you can burn **** up in a hurry.
Highest I've seen is 7870rpm.. Fuel cut seems to kick in at 7500rpm STOCK.. if your running an S-AFC or some other tool that tricks the computer, you could see the fuel cut kick in higher.. This makes sense since it tricks the MAF sensor to think there's more or less air going through it.. Ok...
Make sense?

Ya think there's a hard rev limiter in there somewhere with the fuel cut? I definitely recommend getting a rev control (stutter box) if anyone adjusts their fuel curve, or gets a flash that removes the fuel cut.. I don't know that we'd want to go much higher than 7600rpm (even though I've gone higher, It definitely doesn't get you anything.. a fuel cut can cause a nice backfire, or any number of other bad things up to and including engine damage)

I was racing at the track the other night, and I misshifted the 1-2 shift 2 times in a row. Basically i think it didn't go into 2nd gear and i reved it up in neutral, but pressed the clutch in immediately/let off gas. It went up to i think 8000+ rpms then went back down. If there is a fuel cut at 7800 why was I able to goto 8000+ rpms in neutral? My car seems fine, no weird engine noise or loss of power. BTW I was running a bottle of racing octane booster.
