Tranny kicks shifter back in 1st

Hey guys, I was reading some threads to see if anyone else has this problem, and I've seen a few similar reports. Here's a quick rundown of the symptoms:

When shifting to 1st from neutral, 1st gear won't engage. It won't go all the way in, and if you try to hold it in that position when you let the clutch out it grinds.

Shifting from neutral to 2nd gear, then up to 1st gear everything works fine...

I'm thinking it could be shifter cable adjustment, or bushings, or maybe even the shift selector? Anyone got some suggestions?

You may have the same problem. If it were the cable/bushings, you'd have similar prob with alll gears. My money is that it is inside the gearbox.

Shift fork internally could be worn. This happens when you apply pressure to shifter when racing. Most people do it unconsciously. I build trannies and see this quiet often. Your hand should not be on the shifter when car is in gear.

Simple... shift and let go of the shifter and don't try to hold the shifter or put pressure on it after you have already engaged the gear. Any proper race school will tell you this

Yeah, I think it's the shift fork too.

And yes, if you're racing, you should only grab the shifter when you need to shift, and the rest of the time you keep both hands on the wheel. That's how you race, if you're doing it right.
