Water pump leak / defective?

Yes, I have searched and there are a good number of water pump threads but they are vague as to what the symptoms of water pump failure are. I have coolant leaking from the very bottom of the black plastic timing belt/pulley cover. the leak is inconsistent, meaning it only occurrs every few days and ive only seen it leak when the car is off (right after its been running though). about 2 wks ago the radiator was full and today i looked and the finns are almost exposed...so its not leaking large volumes. so im not sure were exactly the leak is from but it is definetely comes out from the bottom of the pulley cover. i havent notied any unusual noises..whines or ticks

the car is decently modded. stock VIII turbo, all bolt-ons, cams, 93 oct but only running 21 psi, koyo radiator, no head studs...2004 w/ 40k miles

Ironically enough, im going to sean ivey's tomorrow to tune some 750cc injectors (hence the lower boost), so ill be asking him what he thinks also...but i would still like to hear everyones opinion. thanks

It's the water pump. I literally just did this on Saturday lol. My water pump was causing overheating problems though not leaking. MAPerformance has the cheapest ones I could find but it's not too easy to change out. This includes, removal of almost everything on the timing side including the timing belt. Make sure you get a new o-ring and gasket for it as well! Also to save yourself the headache that I went through, after you put it on and get it nice and snug, fill the radiator back up before putting everything back on to make sure the leak is gone. Hope this helps!

Water pump sounds like the problem since it's leaking on that side. That sucks, gonna be a pain in the ***. Easy enough though. Check it out and see what the issue is. If the pump failed or the gasket or what.

i dont have any over heating so i imagine the pump is still functional. it only leaks when the car isnt running so it seems like a gasket leak due to water pooling up when the pump is off. im nervous now of the new injectors going in and incresing boost...ill just have to baby it until i fix the pump..thanks guys

There is a weep hole between the seal and the bearing put there to keep any coolant that gets past the seal from going through the bearing. Look there and if you see antifreeze stains it is time for a new pump.

This is exactly where my waterpump was leaking. I blew out the filler plug but also found out that the actual pump was leaking. Even if it is not leaking badly I would still replace it because its only going to get worse. Your cooling system is not the place you want to skimp out on. Good luck man.
