1st gear is 3rd, 3rd gear is 3rd and then 1st finally comes online after downshift

Shifter goes into gear in all positions with a strange catch (no, it doesn't "catch" on something; just weirdness). 1st gear is third, 2nd gear is 2nd, 3rd gear is 3rd and after the car does finally get up to speed, i can downshift into 1st and it is 1st gear. If I come to a complete stop, 1st is 3rd again. Dooooooooh! WTF is going on? I have never come across this.

The clutch assy is installed correctly, I never took the gearbox apart or played with the synchros/shift forks, the shifter cables are installed in their proper places, I have clutch pressure, there is no binding and the shifting is smooth... just the gears are not in their proper sequence.

how can this be? It just started acting up on itself.

HELP!

Maybe torn shifter bushings at the lever end of the cables?

That's what I am thinking, but the bushings aren't torn. Maybe the cable is bent somehow? Anyway, I am gonna remove the cables and check them out. Maybe I'll get some stiffer bushing inserts once I figure this out. Thanks

The thing actually has a name. It's called the "select lever shoe", and it is an integral piece that when all assembled, is located under the control lever on the control housing assembly. Part number 23241. I guess I am the first here to ever have lost one, since nobody really chimed in. So, if you find yourself in the predicament of weird gear shift patterns, that little piece is the one to blame.
