Egt???

Just got an evo8 last week, and for some dumb reasons, the previous owner had mounted the egt probe on the downpipe, i thought it was only meant to be mounted on the exhaust manifold...is there another benefit to mount it on the downpipe? I notice that cruising it sits around 600* but full throttle it will jump to 900*, but wouldnt that part of the exhaust be hotter right of the downpipe?

If the probe is mounted in the mani and happens to break, it will tear up the turbo on the way through. The DP will not give the same readings as the mani but is safer should any probe damage occur.

Okay that makes sense, BUT the readings on the dp should def be different fromt the ones on the manifold, plus hotter due to the fact that is the exhaust coming right of the turbo correct?

Should be cooler as it is farther from the combustion chamber.

my engine is stock but for some reason the egt is high when underload or at high rpms on the freeway, i am starting to think that the egt probe has gone bad or they are just pointless..
